21’s cooking is big on flavour and short on fuss. We’re talking about a style which embraces the seasons and where the ingredients are king. Expect to find stylish, imaginative dishes – which don’t pander to fads or fashion…………and still have room for pudding. Expect a warm welcome, generous hospitality and service that is both friendly and correct.

A city centre restaurant with a city centre buzz. In the heart of Newcastle's Quayside, 21 has an excitement and warmth all of its own. Smart but not stuffy, sleek but not pretentious, fun but not gimmicky - It's about eating good food in comfortably stylish surroundings.

Menus include Lunch and Early Evening Fixed Price, Five Course Seasonal and à la Carte.

Review summary

AI-generated from verified diner reviews
21 offers a culinary experience that is both "spectacular" and "out of this world." Known for its "fantastic food" and "superb service," it's perfect for special occasions. The menu is a delightful mix of seasonal and local produce, with vegan options available. Although on the pricier side, the quality and ambiance make it worthwhile.

The service at Café 21 is always exemplary. My friend has dietary challenges and nothing was too much trouble. The food was superb. We had a brilliant Christmas 'do' and intend to return in the near future.

Always a pleasure to return to 21. The service was wonderful and couldn't be faulted. My friends meals were all fabulous and we all chose from the Christmas menu. My butternut squash was overly spiced for me, but I was presented with a glass of dessert wine in compensation. The restaurant itself is elegant, really comfy chairs, beautiful decor and white linen table cloths and napkins - what a difference they make!! Looking forward to returning in the not too distant future.

We were a party of three and all ordered differently. The food was delicious but a little more sauce/gravy would have been nice for all the mains. The red cabbage served with the game pie was too acidic. However, we all had a lovely time and will return.

The venue is beautiful and I always look forward to eating here. The staff are so attentive, helpful and cheerful. Normally the food is exquisite, and the Cheese soufflé didn't disappoint. The main course, did disappoint; most of us chose the turkey, which was almost "industrialised", the turkey looking and tasing nothing like the one I roast on Christmas day. One companion had the butternut squash that was miniscule on his plate, although he enjoyed what was there. We chatted later about our experience and decided that the Christmas period is not a good time to go to 21, as the noise level was very high and the food may have suffered as a result of the number of diners. So, we shall visit again when it is quieter and enjoy the excellent food and ambience that are the norm for 21.
