We had a wonderful experience at the Brown Palace today, Sunday, January 19. However, the atrium was so cold. They were actually passing out blankets for the customers. I am surprised that there’s not a better option for heating the area on very cold days service and food was excellent.

Our waitress did not seem very interested in us. The ambience was great seemed that the upper level weight staff was great. The food is so so the piano player was awesome.

Afternoon Tea at the Brown Palace has been an annual tradition for years for me and a couple of friends. The last few years, though, the overall experience has gone downhill. It started three years ago with it being difficult to make a reservation in the first place - OpenTable apparently can't take the load and Dining Services at the hotel doesn't have anyone who answers the phone. The last two years, the service went downhill with staff not being as attentive as they used to be. Then last year they really jacked the price up for holiday tea over the standard price but didn't offer anything additional for the increased cost, so they're charging more just because they can. All of these issues occurred again this year. The customer service started out well with the hostess providing us lap blankets since it was a single-digit temps day, which can make it quite cold in the lobby atrium as people come and go through the outer doors, and our server was attentive initially, but then she disappeared and no one was checking on us until I got up and asked another staff to find our server. The scones and Devonshire cream are always delicious, and I was very happy to see that they have black currant tea again. The finger sandwiches are good; this year they changed the ham to a roast beef, which was tasty and a relief since I avoid eating pork. The desserts are a hit or miss, and this year's were more of a miss for me. Given the price hike and reduction in service, I am getting burned out on this tradition and may look for another place for Afternoon Tea.

There was a horrible cigar smoke smell drifting through the atrium. It was nauseating. We had to change tables once and could still smell it after we moved. If they are going to allow smoking there needs to be an improved ventilation system.

Made this reservation in November for Jan. 14. At that time, the advertised price was $60. When we got there, the price was $75 since it was the Christmas tea. This should have been adjusted in Open Table since the hotel knew that the price would be increased by the time of the reservation. Otherwise, all was exquisite.

Tea at the Brown Palace is always a special occasion. Unfortunately, for us, it just isn’t worth the cost anymore. The service has gone down hill, and we had to ask for more hot water and for a refill on our sandwiches. Our waitress just seemed to disappear. The food is good and the atmosphere is incredible, but for this price, I expect better service.
