Celebrating its 118th Year, Barbetta is the oldest restaurant in New York still owned by its founding family. Barbetta is also New York's oldest Italian restaurant and the oldest restaurant in the Theater District. This three-fold distinction has earned it landmark status by the Locali Storici d'Italia. In a glittering interior decorated with 18th century Italian antiques Barbetta serves the cuisine of Piemonte, Italy's northwestern most region. In summer, its exuberantly verdant garden with century-old trees and scented with the blooms of wisteria, oleander, jasmine and gardenia make it a most sought-after site for al fresco dining.

Having been here several times, I expected a great meal. They apparently hired a new chef and I was greatly disappointed. To start, I would say that the dinner roll tasted like cardboard but that would be unfair to cardboard. My wife ordered the chicken paillard and I ordered the scallops. Both were covered with something trying to pass for sauce but both were clearly just trying to hide the poor taste. For dessert, I had the baked pears which were drenched in a sauce with much too much cinnamon. Finally, to top it all off, I went with an open table reward coupon, and they did not know how to get me the credit. I will not be returning.

Beautiful room, attentive service, great Italian wine list, and a pre-theater value. For the top dining experience here go after the pre-theater menu ends at 7:30, as the standard menu has some gems.

Service a bit hit and miss. No salt and pepper on the table, forgot our bread, had to ask twice for drinks. Food mixed as well - my wife’s lamb was very good but my whole baby chicken with rosti was poor. Chicken was overcooked and very dry. Rosti potato wasn’t cooked through so potatoes still had a firm texture. Also lacked sauce to bring it together. Also a whiff of faded grandeur about the place - that their best years are behind them.

The food was okay. Not worth the expense. I think they over charged me for out wine. We were 5 people and with tip our total was over 800 dollars. We rushed out of there cause we had to get to a show, mostly my fault for not double checking yet that should never happen. The owner doesn’t like jackets out so the force you to check it kinda militant. You’re given a prefix menu limited to what’s online. Wasn’t out favorite. Fine check your bill if you go there may be some funny business going on.

Beautiful dining room, good location, great service but the restaurant needs a new chef. I did not even eat my main course because it was so bad.

In town for the NYC Marathon — needed a special restaurant for a pre- celebration for 9 people to encourage our special runner . Booked this months prior. What a special New York elegance for the oldest family owned restaurant in the city . The prix fixe dinner had sumptuous offerings and was presented with style. Our whole group was so pleased. Also wonderfully enjoyed the piano playing of upbeat classics. HIGHLY RECOMMEND this treasure of a place in the theater district’
