The idea for Basin began several years ago when Chef and Owner of Baru, Edgar Caro, along with his friend Antonio Mata, decided to open Basin, a seafood restaurant serving modernized, lighter versions of traditional Louisiana dishes. Basin sources the best possible ingredients from local sources, highlighting seasonal vegetables and Gulf fish in our daily specials.

Basin offers sidewalk seating along the busiest sector of Magazine Street. We also have a lush courtyard for additional seating and a relaxing escape from the city.

Food was good, but just good. In a city like New Orleans it was underwhelming. No need to go back.

Fresh seafood, craft cocktails, and eclectic decor. Had a great time with family recently. Go for the friendly service.

Appetizers came right away and were pretty good. Our entrees, however, took waaaay too long to come out - around 40 mins after we’d finished our appetizers. One person ordered gumbo which had a whole crab in it, but he had to grab the shell out of the gumbo liquid and use the cracker and hands to break the shell and get the meat. It was a mess and they didn’t provide wipes for fingers or a plate for shells. The jambalaya was flavorful but the shrimp in it were either previously frozen or overcooked; they weren’t great. Overall food was okay but not quite up to the NOLA competition.

Great location and atmosphere. If you get the mussels in cream sauce, order a side of their toasted garlic bread for dipping. You’ll thank me later!

Everything was great but a very limited menu. Only a few options to choose from for each course.

First of all, it was a birthday but was acknowledged. Shrimp remoulade— 4 small ( not jumbo) in a flat plate covered with a very oily mayonnaise sauce with a slight color. A handful of arugula. I didn’t want the green fried tomatoes , thus the arugula. $15 Soft shell crab poor boy// the crab tasted strange. Frozen , fried , reheated. Chemicals? Taken off the bill Chicken tenders ( pink in the center), fries cold. Fried oyster// I didn’t taste but the person who ordered was surprised with the fried anchovies mixed in. One theory was that the oil used for frying was rancid. Server attempted to make things better// he should probably work at a better restaurant. Will not return
