OpenTable insider's guide to: Brixton

Over the past few years, Brixton has made a name for itself as a foodie mecca. It still retains much of its edge and unpolished charm, but now you’ll find some of London’s best international eats amongst its takeaways and market stalls. If you’re heading to a gig at the Academy or just fancy a Brixton Village food crawl, here are some of our favourite places to eat and drink in SW9.

Pre-dinner drinks – Brixton locals are spoilt for choice when it comes to decent watering holes. For beers, try The Duke of Edinburgh, The White Horse, and the Craft Beer Co. If cocktails are more your thing, join the discerning drinkers at Seven, Three Eight Four and Shrub & Shutter.

Date night destinations – Impress someone special with contemporary British cooking at Salon or tapas and a bottle of red at Boqueria. For something a little different, try Gremio – a Spanish restaurant in the candlelit crypt beneath St Matthew’s Church.

Eastern flavours – We love Kaosarn’s authentic Thai food and the Beijing dumplings at Mama Lan, but when we can’t face the queues we head for pan-Asian bar-restaurant Satay or Courtesan cocktail and dim sum parlour.

Boys’ night out – Head down the spice route at Curry Paradise and Elephant, or seek out dude food destinations like CHICKENliquor, Honest Burgers and The Joint.

Cheap eats – Eating out in Brixton is generally pretty affordable – you can eat very well for £20 a head or less in neighbourhood favourites like Casa Sibilla, Franco Manca, Carioca and Negril. Another wallet-friendly gem is Market House, a bar and music venue that invites street foodies and guest chefs to take over their kitchen. Original Fry-Up Material are currently in residence serving seriously good burgers, salt beef hash, mackerel pâté and more.
