It’s British Pie Week – a celebration of one of the nation’s best-loved dishes. Chefs across London have created some incredible Pie Week specials, from classics like steak and kidney to a show-stopping curried mutton pie. If you’re craving comfort food this week, here are ten of the best places to get your pie fix.
The Windmill – This Mayfair pub has won the British Pie Awards three times so pie enthusiasts are in very safe hands. Choose from their chicken, venison and steak suet pastry pies or go for the comforting mash-topped fish pie or lamb shank Shepherd’s pie. Be sure to check underneath for one of 700 prize cards they’re giving away.
Aqua Shard – At this British restaurant on Level 31 of The Shard, executive chef Dale Osborne will be serving a beef and oyster pie, complete with shards of pastry.
The Orange – Satisfy your sweet tooth with the apple, caramel and walnut pie at The Orange in Belgravia. It’s served sharing-style with a generous scoop of vanilla ice-cream.
Paternoster Chop House – There’s a special Pie Week menu on offer at this restaurant near St Paul’s, including old favourites like chicken and mushroom and steak and oyster. We love the sound of their rabbit pie with braised red cabbage and the apple and blackberry pie for dessert. Double pie? Why not!
Holborn Dining Room – At this grand brasserie in Holborn, executive chef and ‘pastry deviant’ Calum Franklin has unveiled a new pie menu. The seasonal pie series begins with a curried mutton pie made with slow-cooked mutton shoulder, potato, and traditional curry spice mix. If you’re more of a traditionalist, try the steamed steak and kidney pudding or the free-range chicken, girolle and tarragon pie.
The Drapers Arms – There’s always a pie on the menu at this Islington gastropub and 50p from each one they sell goes to Action Against Hunger. Pop in this week and get stuck into their suet crust chicken, carrot and mushroom pie.
South Place Chop House – There are some superb Pie Week specials on offer at the South Place Chop House, including duck cottage pie and a decadent rabbit, leek and truffle pie. Save room for Yorkshire rhubarb and apple pie for dessert!
Wright Brothers – At their Borough Market restaurant, Wright Brothers are offering two delicious pies – one surf, one turf. Choose from fish pie (salmon and smoked haddock under creamy mash) or their classic beef, Guinness and oyster pie.
Cinnamon Kitchen – Cinnamon Kitchen is paying homage to one of the nation’s favourite dishes with its very own spiced variety – a pastry-topped Old Delhi style butter chicken pie, with masala mash and fenugreek salad.
MYPIE – Ok, so this one isn’t a restaurant, it’s a vintage Bedford van serving some of the best pies in town. Track them down at Paddington Central (Wednesday) and Broadgate (Thursday) to try their Pie Week special – kangaroo and smoked pancetta. The best bit? Their pies are on sale for a fiver all week long.
In the words of Grace Dent, ‘Love is fickle but a good pie never lets you down’. Amen to that.
