If the British summer had a flavour, it would almost certainly be strawberry. From late May, the scarlet berries dominate dessert menus across the UK, as well as being whizzed into cocktails and sliced into salads. If you’re looking for something to satisfy your sweet tooth, here are seven strawberry desserts to try in London.
Tredwells, Covent Garden
This dreamy combination of English strawberries, smoked mascarpone, meringue and Thai basil is now on the menu at Tredwells, Marcus Wareing’s award-winning modern British restaurant.
Aviary, Moorgate
Forget court-side and head sky-high at Aviary, where they’re serving a fresh strawberry and elderflower Eton Mess, topped with whipped cream and sweet brown sugar meringue. If the heat get too much, cool down with cocktails like the refreshing Grapefruit Speranza and soak up that view.
Boxcar, Marylebone
Specialising in ethically sourced British meat, this Marylebone grill restaurant has become rightly famous for its excellent steaks and Sunday roasts. Ask your waiter which cuts are available (or browse the butcher’s fridge), then choose whether you want to take your beef home or have it cooked right away on their charcoal grill. For dessert, there’s a chocolate brownie, a British cheeseboard, or this delicious vanilla set cream with wild strawberries, basil and honeycomb.
Manetta’s Bar, Mayfair
This summer, Manetta’s Bar at the Flemings Mayfair Hotel is celebrating Wimbledon with a special treat for two to share. For £22.50, you and your guest can enjoy a glass of Champagne Devaux and an Eton Mess sharing dessert. Champagne and strawberries – who could resist?
Palatino, Clerkenwell
At Stevie Parle’s relaxed Italian, it’s all too easy to sink a few Negronis and fill up on plates of silky homemade pasta before you’ve even seen a dessert menu. That’s no bad thing, of course, but we can recommend leaving room for desserts like tiramisu, semifreddo, and this yogurt and strawberry panna cotta with pine nut crumble. Ask for two forks, if you must…
Sargeant’s Mess, Tower Hill
With its terrace overlooking the Thames and Tower Bridge, Sargeant’s Mess is the ideal setting for leisurely summer suppers. The menu, overseen by Mark Sargeant, celebrates all things British so expect classic dishes like Atlantic prawn cocktail, toad-in-the-hole, and fish and chips with mushy peas. The light and creamy strawberry and vanilla cheesecake is the perfect way to round off your meal.
Jason Atherton’s City Social is serving a twist on the classic strawberries and cream. Inspired by Wimbledon and the flavours of British summertime, it’s made with strawberries, crème fraiche, lemongrass parfait, and a scoop of elderflower sorbet.
