Love them or hate them, the freakshake is officially here to stay. Part monster milkshake, part decadent dessert, they’re a must for foodies with a sweet tooth and a big appetite. If you fancy tackling one yourself, we’ve rounded up six restaurants with great food and epic shakes.
A hit with the locals since 1972, Maxwell’s serves an all-American menu in the heart of Covent Garden. Come hungry and tuck into their famous baby back ribs, sizzling fajitas, and prime beef burgers topped with crispy bacon and American cheese. Their freakshakes are super-thick, piled high with sweet treats, and a bargain at £7.95. Choose from Salted Caramel Donut, Oreo Cookie, or the new Unicorn freakshake, complete with candy floss, love hearts and rainbow candy.
Get the gang together for a night out at Sunderland’s favourite dirty burger and cocktail bar. Their menu is a carnivore’s dream, from classic ribs and wings to their ‘saucy tower burgers’ that the average diner might struggle to lift, let alone eat. There are four freakshakes to choose from and our personal fave is the Kinder Surprise – white chocolate and strawberry ice-cream, strawberry sauce, and Chantilly cream, topped with an ice-cream cone, a pack of Fizz Whizz, and a Kinder Egg. Kick it up a notch by adding a shot of bourbon, spiced rum or Baileys for £3.
Burgers & Beers Grillhouse, Edinburgh
At this popular bar and grill on Edinburgh’s Royal Mile, they take a ‘more is more’ approach to pretty much everything. Their freakshakes are a bargain at £6.95 a pop and you can choose from Golden Crunch (with honeycomb and toffee sauce), Chocolate Brownie Smores, or Salted Pretzel and Nutella. Don’t leave without trying one of their famous burgers. We like the Frying Scotsman – an 8oz beef patty piled high with onion rings, cheese, and a haggis fritter, served with a side of creamy pepper sauce.
There are four freakshake flavours on offer at this dive bar diner in the Northern Quarter. Choose from Reese’s Pieces, Jam Doughnut, Salted Caramel Brownie, or Candy Mountain – a strawberry and vanilla concoction topped with whipped cream, mini marshmallows, jelly beans, and hundreds and thousands. (Add a shot of crème de framboise if you’re feeling wild).
At the heart of York’s Hotel Indigo is No. 88 Walmgate, a relaxed British restaurant serving locally sourced meat and produce, cocktails, and craft beers. It’s a great choice for Sunday lunch with the family or a mid-week steak supper on those days when you don’t feel like cooking. The highlight of their dessert menu is their 88 Freakshake – an indulgent blend of local Yorvale ice-cream and toppings that change with the seasons.
This laid-back coffee lounge is the sort of place every neighbourhood should have. They’re open all day long, serving hearty breakfasts, fresh salads and sandwiches, plus small plates and light bites in the evening. On the drinks front, there’s great coffee, breakfast smoothies, cocktails, and some seriously decadent freakshakes.
How do you feel about freakshakes? Are they perfect as a once-in-a-while treat or too much of a good thing?
