Food trends may come and go, but salted caramel is still very much on the menu in London. We’ll take it any way it comes – brownies, cupcakes, hot chocolate – and that’s just for starters. If you can’t resist the sweet-salty stuff either, here are six salted caramel desserts you need to try.
The Game Bird – Salted caramel tart with milk sorbet
Even after hearty mains like roast duck and fish pie, we find there’s always room for a slice of The Game Bird’s salted caramel tart. It’s indulgent but not too sweet, and served with a scoop of palate-cleansing milk sorbet.
Hawksmoor – Peanut butter shortbread with salted caramel ice-cream
This one is just as much a peanut butter pud as a caramel one, but we just couldn’t leave it out. The warm shortbread is outstanding, crumbling under the slightest pressure from your fork, but it’s the ice-cream and a drizzle of caramel sauce that brings it all together. For the ultimate treat, order a box of their salted caramel rolos to scoff on the way home.
Tredwells – Salted caramel soft serve with honeycomb
Sometimes it’s the simplest things that are the most satisfying – Tredwells’ famous soft serve is a case in point. The Mr Whippy-style soft peaks might remind you of childhood trips to the ice-cream van, but the rich caramel flavour and crunchy shards of honeycomb take it to another level entirely.
Pizza East – Salted caramel chocolate tart
Along with the lamb meatballs and the San Daniele pizza, we always recommend this tart to Pizza East first timers. Crisp pastry, smooth caramel, and a thick, dense layer of chocolate topped with sea salt and almonds – what’s not to love?
Hai Cenato – Warm brioche, salted caramel gelato sandwich
Head to Jason Atherton’s buzzy Italian restaurant for the ultimate ice-cream sandwich. Their salted caramel gelato is also available the scoop, but if you haven’t tried it encased in warm, sweet brioche, you’re missing out.
L’Ami Malo – Salted caramel galette
Bringing a taste of France to Spitalfields, this thoroughly modern creperie serves savoury galettes, buckwheat ‘maki rolls’, cocktails, and craft ciders. The dessert menu is all killer no filler, too. If you can resist their classic crêpes Suzette, the sticky sweet salted caramel galette is the perfect way to end your meal.
