About this restaurant

  • Vegan-friendly
  • Charming
  • Good for special occasions
A new generation of Italian cuisine - fresh, light and authentic. By using proper cooking techniques, our flavors are natural and pure. Our menu is a homage to our region Calabria and southern Italian roots reflecting what is being served in Italy today. You can also find an extensive vegan menu that incorporates many of the best Italian dishes. We have been the first restaurant in the USA to have a full Italian Vegan menu since 2015! We believe in sustainability, both in our food and in the design of our restaurant. While our menu focuses on locally grown and seasonal ingredients, our bar and dining areas were created using reclaimed, natural materials. Nothing goes to waste at Civico 1845!

Why they're an Icon

Executive chef: Pietro Gallo - Enrico De Santis

From the OpenTable editors: This sustainably minded Little Italy anchor is an ode to all things Calabrian. Executive chef Pietro Gallo whips up Southern Italian seafood staples plus a rare all-vegan menu that includes lasagna with meat-free ragu—these are nonna’s classics reinterpreted for San Diego’s health-conscious crowd.

Good ambience and service. Wanted to try a new vegan main dish so I went for the rigatoni with capers and olives. The tomato sauce was simple, but good flavor but the dish was lacking overall. Next time I will go for the vegan spaghetti polpette which I’ve had and know is delicious. Vegan squash blossom was excellent.

Server forgot about us. The ricotta and the poutine Nuka and the carbonara all off the vegan menu were not very good. The Vegan tiramisu had a very nice flavor profile, but taste nothing like tiramisu

We have loved Civico 1845 for years. The menu has declined. My wife eats from the Vegan/vegetarian menu, and she says they have shifted too much to "beyond meat" options. I was sad to see no ravioli on the menu. The service was okay, but we got the sense that the servers had too many tables. The noise level inside was louder than usual. Civico was our go-to Italian place in Little Italy when in town, but we might need to branch out. Overall, it is good but it has lost some of its charm and culinary creativity.

Server had little to no knowledge of the wine list. Pesto and focaccia were amazing. Beef carpaccio and salad were ok. Two out of three entrees were WAY over salted, that was very disappointing. We were not offered a dessert menu.

We had a reservation and waited at the bar where we sat for 15 minutes while the two individuals serving didn’t acknowledge our presence. I was visiting my sister in San Diego from Hawaii. They don’t offer us water nor did they say hey will be there in a moment we are really busy. However the older individual serving managed to make another drink for two gentleman. We have enjoyed our past experiences here but this was not one of them. Thank goodness for the hostess being so nice or I would have been more disappointed. Nonetheless we will not be going back but not that it matters they have tons of customers they cater too.

Thrilled to get a dairy free dessert that isn’t sorbet! Food and service were excellent. Will definitely return!
