Kokkari (pronounced “Ko-Kar-ee”) is a small fishing village located on the islands of Samos in the Aegean Sea, whose name is derived from the small onions that were once produced in the nearby fields. Its fertile soil and Mediterranean climate translated into an abundance of fresh produce as well as treasured seafood and game. Legend tells that Kokkari is the site where Orion, a mighty hunter and a young man of gigantic stature and great beauty, fell in love with the daughter of the king of Chios. For the love of her, Orion forged the island for wild game and seafood to prepare elaborate banquets in celebration of their love. Today, we hope you will enjoy your own celebration as you dine at Kokkari Estiatorio on food “fit for the Gods” prepared with an Aegean palate and the style of innovative California fare.

Zuni is special. It’s that rare combination of exceptionally good food, warm and gracious service and a beautiful, timeless environment where you immediately feel at home. It’s been this way for years and it’s why it is one of my favorite restaurants in the world. This visit reinforced that all over again.

One Market was a great place to go for dinner. The first thing you encounter are the staff and the ambience. Both felt extremely welcoming. The decor of the restaurant has a couple of features that make it outstanding without drawing attention to themselves. First is the layout and high ceiling; this allows for a festive overall feel while still allowing normal conversation. Second is it's location where Market turns the corner onto Steuart. Something about dining while watching buses and streetcars round the corner makes it feel a quintessential San Francisco experience. Food: The chicory salad was great. Bordering on minimalist it nevertheless held a great variety of flavors in choice of ingredients. We had a couple of non-alco drinks. I had a "faux groni" bitter drink. On its own, not so fun. But a great prime rib counterpoint. The prime rib. Admittedly SF has set a high bar with HOPR half a city away. So with the inevitable comparisons: Nice crusted cap surrounding the main body of meat. A little stringier than I like overall. The spinach was sauteed with the garlic a little overcooked for my liking. A small amount of mashed potatoes and the biggest popover I've seen on the side. An odd citrus-y butter presumably for the popover. Not horseradish so dont slather it on your meat. Overall, a very credible prime rib dinner. Dessert was very nice. I had the lemon cheesecake, my dining partner had the butterscotch pudding. The latter was pretty rich so warning there if you think it's tiny or if you conversely want something light. The cheesecake? As nice as it was it demonstrated the idea of seasonality. A square slab of cheesecake topped w/ a small scoop of raspberry sorbet was surrounded by summer berries. Some of which tasted exactly how you'd expect summer berries to taste in Dec. In closing, a place we'd revisit. Comfortable with a rewarding menu.

Amazing dining experience for my husband's birthday. Daria was our server and was excellent. We loved her suggestions on the menu as well. We enjoyed the octopus (best I've ever had), lamb meatballs, Gigantes, Smelt, and the goat stew to finish. We were absolutely stuffed and definitely slept like babies! Everything was stunning. I've heard such wonderful things before coming here, and they had exceeded my expectations.

We always try to eat at Gary Danko when we are in town (from Hawaii) for special holidays in this case Christmas Eve. So grateful they were open and able to accommodate us. This is always our go to place because our daughter in law is gluten intolerant and they always graciously accommodate her (even to the point of having gluten free bread). Many restaurants will not accommodate because of possible cross contamination, but Gary Danko always welcomes us. We love the selections of courses and look forward to the muffin they give for breakfast the following morning. The only criticism I have is that there is no valet parking - so we take taxi/uber weather can be severe. You have to try this and you will keep coming back!
