Claro is where New York and Oaxaca meet – the result of chef/owner T.J. Steele’s long-time love for Oaxacan food and culture. Over his many years in Oaxaca, TJ cultivated relationships with local craftsmen, artists, mezcaleros, cooks and farmers throughout the region. Claro is dedicated to making everything by hand, including the masa, cheeses, chorizo and moles. The dinner was spectacular in every way. Hygge in New York! The atmosphere was cozy, congenial and filled with Christmas cheer. Flowers and soft candle light everywhere. The punterelle salad was perfectly dressed with ample anchovies, the sea bream en papillote was tender and infused with deep flavor. Add a perfectly balanced negroni sbagliatto to start and the evening was perfect.

The food is always excellent. I felt sorry for the staff; the service was terrific, but they were understaffed, even though it's a small restaurant. I am unsure how they managed on a busy weeknight during the holiday season, but kudos to the manager/owner.

We went at lunchtime so restaurant was pretty empty. The service was excellent! Especially Ricardo! Food was delicious and plentiful! We had a great time! The only issue was the address was a bit confusing as the restaurant entrance was actually on E 19th which was not specified. Would highly recommend!!
