In 1976 Michael Garman returned to Brighton and opened IL Bistroafter being inspired by the Italian and French culture and cuisineduring his travels to the Provence and the western coast of Italy.His goal was to open Brighton’s first Mediterranean steakhouse.For the first time, Brightonians were able to order fresh pasta,arancini, dry aged beef, tiramisu and negronis.47 years later and now being operated by Michael's son Abe,IL Bistro still stands by the same principles, using local suppliersand produce, fresh ingredients and the best available dryaged British beef. The restaurant is situated in an 18th centuryfisherman’s cottage which we find rather fitting after Michaelspent years in Portofino, Livorno and Saint-Tropez, Europe’smost famous fishing villages.Booking info:Since reopening from covid we ask for a £10 per person deposit in our busier times which gets deducted from your bill at the end of your meal.     Went to Botanique for brunch last Saturday. Can safely say in 46 years of living this was the best brunch I’ve ever had. I don’t normally write reviews but felt compelled to after this gastro spectacular. We started with the rosemary and truffle polenta, the accompanying dips were incredible. However the 3 brunch plates we ordered between us (no judgement please) were incredible. Wild mushroom on focaccia with sunflower ricotta was a delight. Fresh and bursting with umami richness. Next the Benedict, with silky smooth hollandaise, smoked aubergine rusher, crispy kale and avocado was insane. Finally the pancakes which the hostess kindly split into two bowls. Wow. These pancakes were phenomenal, with maple, fruit compote, fresh strawberries, coconut yoghurt and almond brittle. Would highly recommend. This is simply what all other vegan brunches aspire to.

    Sonia was our waitress - she was absolutely fantastic. She was on top of everything and so polite and interesting. The cheese soufflé was outstanding - as was the ribeye steak along with spinach and chunky chips. Yumbo!!! The Rose wine was delicious too - just the inexpensive one at the top of the rose list. Try it

    It was a wonderful evening and the food and service fantastic . The only disappointment came from my 18 yo daughter , her friend and my son who is older were ID checked and because they didn’t have their passports or any ID with them , they were refused wine with their meal and any drinks which slightly changed the celebratory occasion. We don’t normally drink but on a special night out we would not have expected to have this to have been refused. I belive that they should tell diners when booking g that without ID they will be refused alcohol . Never has this ever happened before in my life time of dining out with my family. I am 56 and my husband 66 so it was a shock.
