In 1688, Joseph Haviland built a tidewater gristmill that provided the locally-grown grains to a nearby bakery that supplied farmers and tradesmen with bread. It was the first public oven in New York State. Haviland’s Old Grist Mill and the public bakery were community gathering places for two centuries. Can't say enough good things about Beginnings. Food was great and portions very large. Many dishes can be shared easily. The restaurant felt so warm and inviting. Really decorated nice. Service Excellent. If you like Fried Chicken, the 'Yardbird" is great. Go Enjoy!!

My wife and I are regulars at Haviland's. The food and service is always consistent. The menu has something for everyone and the bolognese is off the charts good. The specials are inventive. The atmosphere is elegant and not pretentious. I think we're lucky to have this type of restaurant in our neighborhood.

Everything from the baked clams, fried calamari and stuffed mushrooms to the halibut, chicken sorrentino and rigatoni with mushrooms was delicious. Desserts were overrated and quite expensive for what they were. $15 for a slice of Italian cheesecake, really? Server was excellent!
