Ethiopian owner Meaza Zemedu, whose Meaza Restaurant, Cafe and Gourmet Grocery Store have been featured in such press outlets as the Washingtonian and the Washington Post, was born of humble roots. Meaza Zemedu started her business by supplying local Ethiopian stores with her home-baked injera bread, a crepelike staple of Ethiopian cuisine.Demand for the tangy bread grew, allowing her to open her majestic restaurant, which welcomes guests to dine on traditional Ethiopian fare. Northern Virginia Magazine heaped praise upon the menu, including the doro wat stew—the national dish of Ethiopia—which includes chicken, red pepper, garlic, and hard-boiled eggs. Many of Meaza’s dishes are flavored with purified, spiced Ethiopian butter, from the ye beg kikil—lamb stew in spicy sauce—to the kifto—ground beef traditionally served raw or rare and mixed with cardamom and a mitmita spice blend.

The menu follows a Southern-fried meat-and-three concept, meaning diners order a meat, plus three sides. Those will include Ruthie’s mac and cheese, of course, but also white-soy-braised greens, stewed chickpeas and smoked cauliflower with a spicy soy glaze. “We’re going to be changing it a lot based on seasonality,” Hill says of the menu. “ Every vegetable has got to be fantastic because it has to stand on its own.” One thing that will help that: Hill is already growing all of the restaurant’s own herbs at his South Arlington community garden plot.

This is “the place” to eat in DC - amidst the power brokers of industry & government -the atmosphere is clubby and the service impeccable. The steaks are absolutely delicious cooked to perfection and accompanied by delectable sides, like their signature creamed spinach. The Boston Clam Chowder was simply the best I’ve ever had and my filet was tender and really scrumptious

This place was on my to do list for a year. Did not disappoint. We had one hot pot, it was okay. Person who ordered said he’d chose more tasteful broth then we realized there were condiment bar he could utilize. Server could have been more helpful in explaining how to eat hot pot. The rest of the dishes we shared family style. Sweet and sour fish was crunchy and soft, a hit with all 5 diners especially our 6 yr old. Braised pork belly with tofu delish and savory. Duck dish as very tasty but the bones were too numerous and dangerously slivered. We did not give to younger diner. Boy choy and shittake was tender, could have added some oyster sauce. Beef w/rice noodles a hot all around too. All in all we throughly enjoyed the food, took home some containers for lunches tomorrow. My husband and I will be back again to try hot pot on our next trips to visit family who live in area.
