Fitzbillies is a Cambridge institution, founded as a bakery in 1921. On Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights we serve dinner. An innovative menu of dishes from seasonal and local ingredients in a relaxed setting. During the day we still serve delicious cream teas, spectacular lunches, excellent food to take away and of course our world famous, super-sticky Chelsea buns. (We only take bookings for dinner. During the day just walk in and we can usually find you a table.)

Fitzbillies is that rare thing - an excellent tea shop that converts very successfully into a decent evening restaurant. The menu only offers about half a dozen choices of main course but my companion and I were both very satisfied with our dishes (steak & chips and baked cod with lentils). Although the dessert were enticing we opted for the cheese platter which was superb. The Maitre D added a taster of the 5th cheese on offer which we had not included in our order; he said it was to win us round as it was his favourite - and it was actually very pleasant! Service was great, location is good and we were more than happy with the value for money. We will definitely be back.

The sharing charcuterie starter platter had one slice of toast for the two of us to share which wasn't enough and just a bit basic, the fish cakes were very salty and we were not told until after we started to order that the game pie had sold out. Should have been informed before being given the menu. A bit disappointing to be honest and no special attention given even though I mentioned it was to celebrate a birthday. No frills or special touches, just a bit disappointing. The waitress was nice.

A welcome change to packed out noisy restaurants. Slightly quirky, but a very fresh calming environment. Food was a bit different and very good - but more information from the waiter would have altered the side dishes we chose to augment the main course. Hot Chelsea bun with custard was a great way to finish.

Lovely ambience in the restaurant, and nice place for a group meal amidst the chains of Cambridge. 2 of our party said their mains were over seasoned - they go very heavy on the salt here. It's also a tad overpriced. £7.50 for a crab starter half as good as the Hawksmoor's but for the same money. But given the choice between here and Cote brasserie it's still worth choosing Fitzbillies.

The food itself is decent, some creative ideas but the taste is certainly nothing to write home about. The same quality can be found for nearly half the price elsewhere in Cambridge. We had some bread with butter as an appetizer. The bread strangely included untoasted toast bread. The choice of mains is very limited, which is I like in general, but in our case there was only one vegetarian option to choose from. The desserts where higher value than the mains. Besides the food, we were charged almost twice the price for the wine compared to the menu. They corrected the mistake, but still something that shouldn't happen. The atmosphere is as nice as during the day, maybe a bit quieter.

Fitzbillies at night is just as noisy as during the day - the acoustics are appalling! But the food was nice, service was good and the atmosphere casual and buzzy. The cop-out are the puddings; so out of character with the rest of the menu, and straight from the day-cafe - brownie and ice-cream.....hmmmm. Take this into account, have the cheese board and enjoy a nice evening out and a good meal.

We had a lovely meal here. They are open for dinner Thursday to Saturday. There is complementary bread - a delicious nutty loaf - and both our main courses were tasty and well prepared. Service was friendly, considerate, and well timed. Highly recommended for a relaxed dinner in Cambridge.

Second time we've been to Fizbillies and again it was a wonderful evening. It's rare you go to a restaurant and everything on the menu is tempting. You can only see the bakery from the outside but once you go in there's a lovely quirky restaurant with only a few tables creating a really nice and intimate atmosphere. The food was delicious from start to finish. I had asparagus in a delicious tangy sauce with a poached egg to start followed by fish in a lemon and clam sauce. Pudding was a delicious cheese cake with honeycomb pieces and lovely sauce. Since they change the menus really regularly depending on what's in season it's a good excuse to go back there again soon.

Went for a birthday meal. Very attentive , friendly service. Took quite a while to decide what we wanted as we kept changing our minds. Eventually settled on the Kalbi flank with chips and salad. Very satisfied with our decision. The steak was very tender and the sauce delicious. Fantastic chips! Not an extensive menu but quality ingredients prepared to a high standard. Also sampled the famous Chelsea buns earlier in the afternoon - wow! Best ones we've ever had - very gooey.

I had smoked salmon with blue cheese and grapefruit. Did not think blue cheese which was a dressing was a good combo. Too rich. And dotted on the salmon so not avoidable! More vegetable based starter ( so that meal overall is lighter not for vegetarian reasons) would be good. On previous occasion sat in the section in front of the kitchen. Although at far end of this section our clothes and hair ended up smelling of cooking fat. You need a much better extractor fan if you have a open kitchen. Would be nicer for staff too. Service efficient and friendly.
