Hayes Street Grill is a neo-traditional fish house in San Francisco's Civic Center district, across the street from the Performing Arts Center, opposite Davies Symphony Hall and a block from both the Opera House and City Hall. We use an international mix of recipes, unified with a theme of fish and seafood. Above every other consideration, we want the freshness and pristine quality of the fish, produce, and naturally-raised meats to speak for themselves.

The Hayes Street Grill's walls are covered with autographed photos of the artists who consider the restaurant their club. Though we've remodeled since our opening 33 years ago, the original brass coat hooks along the walls remain, as does our founding philosophy of cooking only the food we would serve at home to our families, albeit dressed up a little, with a religious dedication to wholesomeness.

A great standby before the ballet or symphony with a team that works its buns off to give great service even though very crowded. And the food is consistently top notch!

The Hayes Street Grill is predictable, and that's a good thing. The seafood is always fresh and cooked perfectly, and often that means simpler is better. We had dinner last night pre-SF Jazz. The place was packed, but the service was great. Both the scallops and the sea bass were excellent. The wine list isn't large, but reflects what goes well with seafood. The chiffon mousse dessert was tasty and light as a feather. The one disappointment was the pea soup. The flavors were fine, but the broth was inconsistent and chalky. But, overall a great experience.

We have been going to the Hayes Street Grill for many years. It is the one restaurant that has been around for many decades in SF that is consistently excellent, especially for fish. Our lunch today before a ballet matinee confirmed their high standards once again. And they always help you get to performances on time.

Hayes Street is always good. Consistent, unfussy delicious food, friendly efficient staff and I love what it says about the owner/management that many of the staff members have been there for years. The Bay Area is blessed with many other terrific seafood restaurants with more innovative or complex fare but for a beautiful piece of fish, simply and beautifully prepared, nothing beats Hayes Street Grill. Ditto their perfect French Fries. One "ding" for a dry, lifeless cheesecake but the creme brûlée was delicious. So nice to see it really busy last night well after the Opera, Symphony, Jazz Center rush.

The food at the Hayes Street Grill last night was really excellent, as we have come to expect. The service was also perfect, pleasant, attentive, but not at all intrusive. And the noise level was low enough that we had an easy conversation. It is an ideal destination taht works well for dinner before the ballet or symphony or opera and as a really enjoyable place to eat terrific seafood. Even the non-local seafood that we had, New England scallops, was delicious--it must have been flown in from the east coast that day. No one should miss the smoked trout appetizer.

We were going to the symphony after dinner, so we especially liked the friendly and prompt service. And the food was terrific. I’ve eaten at Hayes St Grill 8 or 10 times and it’s always been dependable.
