The basic menu rarely changes (although there are daily specials), and offers plenty of variety and satisfaction. I had the medaillons de boeuf and my fellow diner had the venison. Both were superbly tender and in superb sauces.\n\nThe service is excellent: attentive, but discrete (I hate being asked 3-4 times during a meal \"how's the food,\" \"are you still working,\" etc.\n\nThe noise level depends on how full the place is on a given evening. Tonight it was full, so the noise level was fairly high....but still NOT the deafening racket one encounters in all too many DC restaurants, which sometimes seem to foster that noise (with lousy acoustics) on the dubioustheory that, at least for a younger crowd, loud noise equals a good time.\n\nIn sum, Chaumiere is old school quality, good food and service, and a nice atmosphere. My one criticism is that, like all too many higher end restaurants, it really is charging exorbitant fees on its wine list. There are only 2-3 choices of wine by the glass for less than $18 per glass. I could well afford it, but I refuse to be made a fool or (in my view) exploited, so I chose a non-alcoholic beer Their Quenelles de brochet in Lobster Sauce (which can be an appetizer or a main) is the ocean in a dish. We also enjoyed the grilled oysters and the escargot as appetizers. The Arctic char is a step above, and of course, the Dover Sole was the star of the show. Remember to order a dessert souffle when you order your main meal. It was a perfect end to the evening.\n\nThe service is excellent and welcoming; the ambiance is bustling and exciting, like a lively Paris Bistro on a busy night. If you make a 5:30 pm reservation, please keep in mind that the restaurant does not open the doors to let you in until 5:30 pm, which means waiting outside if you are early. The next door CVS is an optional waiting place.\n\nThe restaurant gives you a warm and cozy feel. I would prefer more separation between the tables. There was no one offering to take coats and patrons were hanging them over the back of the very uncomfortable chairs at each table.\n\nThe bread was soft, warm and tasty with the supplied soft butter. It was a pleasure to eat a meal in which everything was not over-salted or over-peppered. Those who like a significant amount of either will be requesting the shakers. The baked onion soup and oysters Le Chaumiere were excellent; the house salad was only OK because it was not my taste in dressings; the fish dishes were excellent and very ample; the mashed potatoes were delicious and the green beans were very tasty but unfortunately only a garnish. The service was excellent except for the delay in delivering the desert souffle. The apply pastry desert with ice cream was very good. On the other hand, the chocolate soufflé was a significant disappointment -- dry, unless saturated with the vanilla sauce, and even then missing the taste of deep, rich, dark chocolate I had expected. Chaumiere is \"old reliable,\" having been in business in Georgetown for nearly 50 years. The basic menu rarely changes (although there are daily specials), and offers plenty of variety and satisfaction. I had the medaillons de boeuf and my fellow diner had the venison. Both were superbly tender and in superb sauces.\n\nThe service is excellent: attentive, but discrete (I hate being asked 3-4 times during a meal \"how's the food,\" \"are you still working,\" etc.\n\nThe noise level depends on how full the place is on a given evening. Tonight it was full, so the noise level was fairly high....but still NOT the deafening racket one encounters in all too many DC restaurants, which sometimes seem to foster that noise (with lousy acoustics) on the dubioustheory that, at least for a younger crowd, loud noise equals a good time.\n\nIn sum, Chaumiere is old school quality, good food and service, and a nice atmosphere. My one criticism is that, like all too many higher end restaurants, it really is charging exorbitant fees on its wine list. There are only 2-3 choices of wine by the glass for less than $18 per glass. It did not disappoint in any way. Fabulous atmosphere and the attentive service complements the excellent French menu choices. Started with the Pate , which in our opinion is the best in the DC area. Had the beef short rib special for a main course which was done perfectly and not was not overwhelmed by the sauce. Finished with the Grand Mariner soufflé. We each had a glass of the French Pinot Noir with dinner, which was delicious. Only negative for us suburbanites venturing into DC is the street parking near to the restaurant is on narrow streets with lots of no parking areas and finding a free spot is therefore challenging. We found a spot about two blocks away after about a 10 minute search. Le Chaumiere is "old reliable," having been in business in Georgetown for nearly 50 years. The basic menu rarely changes (although there are daily specials), and offers plenty of variety and satisfaction. I had the medaillons de boeuf and my fellow diner had the venison. Both were superbly tender and in superb sauces.
The service is excellent: attentive, but discrete (I hate being asked 3-4 times during a meal "how's the food," "are you still working," etc.
The noise level depends on how full the place is on a given evening. Tonight it was full, so the noise level was fairly high....but still NOT the deafening racket one encounters in all too many DC restaurants, which sometimes seem to foster that noise (with lousy acoustics) on the dubioustheory that, at least for a younger crowd, loud noise equals a good time.
In sum, Chaumiere is old school quality, good food and service, and a nice atmosphere. My one criticism is that, like all too many higher end restaurants, it really is charging exorbitant fees on its wine list. There are only 2-3 choices of wine by the glass for less than $18 per glass. I could well afford it, but I refuse to be made a fool or (in my view) exploited, so I chose a non-alcoholic beer instead.

We had not visited since 2019 due to the COVID shutdowns etc. Chose La Chaumiere as a pre Kennedy center performance dinner option. It did not disappoint in any way. Fabulous atmosphere and the attentive service complements the excellent French menu choices. Started with the Pate , which in our opinion is the best in the DC area. Had the beef short rib special for a main course which was done perfectly and not was not overwhelmed by the sauce. Finished with the Grand Mariner soufflé. We each had a glass of the French Pinot Noir with dinner, which was delicious. Only negative for us suburbanites venturing into DC is the street parking near to the restaurant is on narrow streets with lots of no parking areas and finding a free spot is therefore challenging. We found a spot about two blocks away after about a 10 minute search. The four seasons hotel across the street has expensive paid parking if you want quick and easy parking but I would give street parking a shot first.
