Born and raised in Kansas City Missouri, southern hospitality is on the top of our list. It’s more than tradition. It’s ice cold beer, key lime pie, and a party in our backyard. Our family wanted to turn passion into a reality in 2013, so we came together and opened Mallards. With Dad in charge of the menu all of our favorites started showing up! From Jambalaya to Tennessee Hot Chicken, our story finds itself on each and every plate!

What started out as a butcher shop concept, has evolved and changed over the years to become a full-service restaurant, which was solidified with the restaurant's move to a larger space in 2022. At Bavette, the consumer will enjoy complete transparency of its food moving from farm to plate. Although the butcher shop has been phased out, the restaurant still works with the same farms, and uses the same high quality meats on its menu, which consists of a daily changing menu consisting of salads, sandwiches, small plates, pates, cheese, and charcuterie boards. The restaurant truly is a farm-to-table restaurant, sourcing not only the meat but most of its produce from nearby farms. In addition to the highly seasonal menu, there is a small store featuring chef-curated retail items, such as Wisconsin cheeses, local charcuterie, artisanal jams, pickles, salts, vinegar, and oil. Going along with the thoughtful menu is a select and unique offering of craft beers, wines, and cocktails.

I so enjoyed our time at Birch. Our server was helpful, the ambiance was lively and the food was great. While our entrees were excellent, I’m glad we saved room for dessert. The goat milk cheesecake and the pear upside down cake were extraordinary’

We really enjoyed our meal! The hostess overheard me commenting about my sister’s birthday and they put a card on the table so she would get a complimentary dessert. Fun! And the flourless chocolate cake was delicious! The menu was small, which shows they take care to provide seasonal options. I had the short rib, which was very tender and my sister had the meatballs and pasta, which she loved. They have non-alcoholic drink options, which was nice, as my sister doesn’t drink. She could still feel festive! The waitress was attentive, but not intrusive. A very pleasant evening!

I often have the sole, but opted for the filet as did my dinner companion. The food and service were excellent as usual.

Food was good to very good, except the three cheese truffle flatbread, which was very plain, missing any truffle flavor and seemed to be topped with the cheapest grated parm. Service was ok, could be better. I don't think a single finished plate was cleared until we left the table. Service was courteous, at least. Admittedly, I was annoyed that they claimed not to take reservations, even though I had a reservation on OpenTable. It just wasn't a good look for our birthday dinner, kind of embarrassing and awkward. We enjoyed the outdoor area; firepit, giant jenga, giant Connect 4, bag toss, comfy seating, live music. Overall, good.
