From cobblestoned alleys to breathtaking harbor views, Boston’s best outdoor dining setups offer many scenic perks. The city once just had a handful of alfresco dining options, but times have changed in this cultural capital.

An iconic seafood restaurant serves gorgeous Atlantic Ocean views. In Cambridge, a farm-to-table spot heats up its outdoor tables with a giant stone fireplace—this is New England, after all. Candy-colored wall art and lush greenery add to the wow factor at a popular izakaya.

The food at these restaurants is as inviting as the backdrop, including, of course, a few places specializing in every local’s warm-weather favorite: the lobster roll. Read on for a guide to 12 Boston restaurants that ace outdoor dining.

Excellent service! Incredible actually. Menu is inventive without being pretentious. Love the parlor/lounge atmosphere. Be aware that this restaurant sometimes becomes more of a bar/nightclub (this may be on weekends) so call ahead to verify. Highly recommend.

Porto’s outdoor seating is some of Boston’s best thanks to its size and design. String lights, throw rugs, couches, and pretty craft cocktails make the patio a prime spot to take in Back Bay’s skyscrapers. James Beard Award-winning chef Jody Adams focuses on Mediterranean food with dishes like a decadent seafood tower, grilled lamb chops with salsa verde, and scallops a la plancha.

Hands down the best seafood we've ever eaten. We had the crab cake appetizer and then split the stuffed lobster tails. Wow. The cheesecake was also good but I wish we would have asked for no seasonal (strawberry) topping as it was wonderful plain. Our server was excellent. Wish we could have gone there twice when we were in town.

The path to Casa Romero is downright Oz-like: An alley leads diners to a hidden but vibrant world filled with colorful chair cushions and lots of greenery. This casual Mexican gem is the oldest of its kind in Boston and has served top-notch tacos, enchiladas, tequila drinks, and more in its fenced-in outdoor hideaway since 1972.

In the summertime as tourists rush to Boston, Mare becomes people-watching central. Everything was fabulous! Food was absolutely delicious. The best duck we have ever eaten. The chef even came out to see us and thank us for the compliment. Our waitress was lovely too. A superb find. Will definitely return when in Boston again

Tuesday evening dinner with friends. I had a reservation that was confirmed earlier in the day, but when we arrived the place was bumping and there wasn't a table available? There were many big parties and the back end of restaurant was closed off for an event. Hmmm. There are two managers and one was at a loss. Thankfully the other manager came to us and said there was a table that had just paid and could we wait a moment. We did. I'm glad we waited because we had a table by the window, near the front of the restaurant and away from the hub bub; it was perfect. He thanked us for waiting and our waiter was fantastic; we each had selections from the traditional French menu - so good and beautifully plated. Lovely drinks, we shared the beet salad and a creme brulee. This is my third time eating at Batifol and I am looking forward to my next dinner or brunch there.

About the restaurant

This neighborhood star offers outdoor dining areas all-year-round. One of its patios is covered and heated, meaning you don’t have to worry about bringing a jacket. The other is tucked to the side and feels more intimate with some greenery for shade. Branch Line is known for a rotisserie and wood-fired grill that churns out juicy roasted chicken, plus a long list of craft beer from breweries all over the country, but the menu changes regularly, so you’ll have to keep going back.

Such a great team. Nick, the bartender, is awesome! Made an incredible off menu cocktail that was honestly one of the best drinks I’ve ever had! We’ve gone to Branchline for YEARS and order takeout as well, but our new favorite thing is date night sitting at the bar!
