It’s easy to see why Londoners flock to this French favourite for all sorts of celebrations. They’re partly here for tableside theatre from an attention-grabbing duck press that makes Otto’s iconic canard à la presse possible. The hefty contraption extracts juices from the bird which is served three ways: liver atop morels and sweetbreads, slivers of duck breast in that infamous pressed sauce with pommes soufflées, and confit duck leg with foie gras and black truffle (due to avian flu, pigeon à la presse is on offer instead). Other examples of Gallic gastronomy can be found on the a la carte menu, such as lobster soufflé with Oscietra caviar and lobster bisque. We had the early set menu (three courses for £37) which was the same price as a standard main course. It was excellent; lots of choice and generous portions. Would recommend the trout starter and belly pork main. Extras still add up, mind. End bill was twice that when we added sides, an aperitif and a carafe of wine. So fair value in the end rather than 'bargain'.

We had an excellent time. The food was delicious, especially the vegetable noodles, and the staff were super friendly and accommodating. Absolutely fine for a nut allergy as only two dishes have nuts in and this was very clearly signposted. Will definitely be coming back!

Bistro Union never disappoints, but today’s lunch was my best experience yet! Dining with my wife, a friend, and one of my sons, we were once again blown away by the quality and variety of the menu. The ingredients are second to none, and the duck breast—truly one of the best I’ve ever tasted. This restaurant is a jewel in the crown of Abbeville Road.
