We had a lovely meal at Maxwells which is ideally situated in the heart of Covent Garden. The children’s menu is very reasonably priced with large portions. All the food was delicious - I had the halloumi fajitas which I really enjoyed. Desserts also very nice. Staff were friendly and attentive. Music at just the right volume to create an atmosphere but not so loud that you can’t have a chat with your family and friends. We booked a table and I would recommend doing this as there was a queue of people trying to get tables.

It’s easy to see why Londoners flock to this French favourite for all sorts of celebrations. They’re partly here for tableside theatre from an attention-grabbing duck press that makes Otto’s iconic canard à la presse possible. The hefty contraption extracts juices from the bird which is served three ways: liver atop morels and sweetbreads, slivers of duck breast in that infamous pressed sauce with pommes soufflées, and confit duck leg with foie gras and black truffle (due to avian flu, pigeon à la presse is on offer instead). Other examples of Gallic gastronomy can be found on the a la carte menu, such as lobster soufflé with Oscietra caviar and lobster bisque. We had a good experience and enjoyed our visit very much. My husband was slightly disappointed with his carbonara as he has heard from Italian chefs that bacon should never be used but always pancetta in a carbonara and it should be crispy. His was neither of these things. My mushroom risotto was not as mushroomy as I would have liked but the flavour was good. The starters were excellent and the creme brûlée was also delicious.

The £115 menu is a true tribute to gastronomy, featuring a haddock soufflé crafted true to Escoffier's recipe and a perfectly executed Beef Wellington. As French visitors (yes, we do love fine dining), we were blown away by the impeccable service, the warm and attentive staff, and the incredible privilege of a behind-the-scenes tour of the kitchens – pure magic!
