Behind a gym, in what looks like a boarded up fast food restaurant, is a Culver City institution: Dear John’s. This is a steakhouse and cocktail lounge, with great sides. It’s really, really dark inside, but that’s part of the vibe. The steak was huge (I had the 18oz ribeye), perfectly grilled, and outstanding. Because it’s so small, it can be difficult to get a reservation on a Saturday, so book early. Closed on Sundays and Mondays.

Another excellent experience at Maple Block. Service was fantastic and the brisket and chicken were delicious. We loved that the pulled pork didn't come out drenched in sauce--it had just enough to balance the fatty pork.

This is a more intimate gastropub on the inside, with outside seating available. The service was excellent, and the food was good to great. We enjoyed the tempura-battered shrimp and fish and chips, and we plan on coming back for vegan shepherd's pie. There is a good bar menu and happy hour as well.

Great experience! My friend and I thoroughly enjoyed the Avocado Egg Rolls, a Smokehouse Burger, and the Cherry Chipotle Glazed Salmon. Our server was friendly, attentive, and knowledgeable about the menu. The only downside was the horrendous parking situation at the mall. That’s what we get for dining out a few days before Christmas. Lol.
