One if by Land, Two if by Sea has been recognized for its classic menu, long history, and beautiful decor. It is often cited as the most romantic restaurant in New York City. The decor features candlelit tables, brick fireplaces, a baby grand piano and a private garden.

The restaurant operates inside a historic, land-marked carriage house built in 1767.

Established in 1973, One if by Land, Two if by Sea soon became the go to spot in NYC for engagements, anniversaries, weddings and just a night out for quiet dinner.

    Tremendous meal. Segundo, our waiter, was professional and friendly. The ambience was perfect. We were greeted upon arrival so nicely w a friendly attentive welcome. The food was delicious and served hot.(not always the case, even at the finest restaurants). One if by land continues to be one of the most special places in NYC to celebrate important occasions.

    The food was good but not outstanding and the wine was just OK. We tried 3 reds by the glass and only the Malbec was any good. The mushroom consomme sounded amazing but was more like a salty onion soup with a few mushrooms thrown in. Don't choose it. The price to quality ratio was high even for NYC. The ambiance is lovely, though someone should teach the pianist how to play "Take Five". I'd recently eaten at a 1 star Michelin place in Paris, and the last place my friend and I dined was Le Coucou here in the city. Both were much better at a lower price.

    We went here for my husband’s birthday, expecting a romantic and high-end experience. Instead, the service felt entirely unremarkable—almost as if attention to detail wasn’t part of their business model at all. First, the seating. They placed us at a cramped two-top across from each other, even though there were round tables for two where we could’ve sat side by side—something we would have much preferred. There was nowhere to put my designer bag except the floor, which immediately set the tone for the night. Then came the food. I made it clear that I’m pescatarian, yet they brought out a chef’s compliment: a quail egg with pancetta. When I asked if they could serve it without, the runner went back to the kitchen—only to return and say they couldn’t. How does that make sense? Just don’t put the pancetta on top. Am I crazy for thinking that’s an easy fix? To make it even more absurd, they only left the dish for my husband and took mine away. Since when do restaurants take food back like that? It was half a quail egg. My husband would’ve eaten it—why waste it? To be fair, the food itself was outstanding. The branzino was the best I’ve ever had. But for a birthday treat? They gave us two tiny cookies and two pieces of marmalade. Not exactly a grand gesture. I get the concept. It’s upscale, it’s intimate, it attracts a certain clientele. But let’s be real—$450 for dinner, and nothing about the experience felt special (besides the food). If I’m paying that much, I expect more than just good flavors. There are plenty of places with fresh, delicious food for a fraction of the price and with actual attention to detail. This place wasn’t exclusive or exceptional—it just felt like they knew they could get away with the bare minimum and still charge a premium.

We constantly talk about guests preferences, requests and expectations; so I will followup with the Team and the Chef on why this occurred. The freshly baked cookies and pâte de fruits are a kind gesture to acknowledge a guest's birthday. Because of the intimate setting we find this is an elegant way to do so while respecting the dining experiences of others. I appreciate the review and we will never take this feedback for granted.     It was an intimate and romantic experience with my beautiful partner. The food was delicious. The drinks were great as well that we tried other cocktails on the menu. Coup D’amour was her favorite and the Bentley was mine as well as the Oldest Fashioned.Beef Wellington was the highlight of our night with the pastry and beef being well-seasoned and cooked perfectly medium-rare. Finished the night off with a special request from the restaurant with a desert spelling out happy birthday.
