Abacá is an airy, atelier-style restaurant with a cool outdoor terrace, whipping up Filipino-Californian cuisine with flair in Fisherman's Wharf. It's the bricks-and-mortar spin off of chef Francis Ang's pop-up Pinoy Heritage. The lively menu is split up into barbecue sticks, noodles and rice, and small to big plates, but its far more nuanced than just that. Flavourful dishes pull from family recipes and are glazed with modern and heritage technique to result in a vibrancy that's hard to come by. It's grounded by local produce. Smoked Bay scallops lead in the seafood pancit, heirloom tomatoes top homemade tinapay bread, chicken skin is glazed in an adobe before hitting the grill and guinea fowl comes slathered with peanut sauce. A truncated list of creative Southeast Asian libations bring it full circle – if you're on the terrace, cool off with the Baguio breeze slushy – a dreamy mix of pandan-infused vodka, coconut and strawberry.

The rustic, market-driven menu features handmade pasta, pizzas, antipasti, housemade salumi, meat, and fish plus dishes from the Jewish-Roman heritage known as “Cucina Ebraica.” The beverage program focuses heavily on both Italian and Californian wines with a cocktail program that utilizes a variety of spirits, amaros, and seasonal ingredients. The food, space, and staff is always great, but parking when there’s an event at Fort Mason is a nightmare. My husband tried for a full hour with no luck, so I ordered for takeaway since we couldn’t eat there together. (The restaurant should figure out a way to secure parking spaces in the lot for diners, leaving event-goers to park in the lots further away and then take a shuttle over.)

We started at the bar for a cocktail! Love that the bartenders have been there for 20 plus years! And enjoyed seeing a new apprentice learning the ropes! He was delightful!! And again having wait staff at the table that are ole pro’s and especially the backup staff! Very courageous and took such good care of us!! We had a wonderful time. We are locals and so enjoyed a SF favorite and landmark of the city!! Thank you! My Sanddabs were delicious!!

The "dim sum" small dishes are delicious, innovative, surprising. And they keep on coming. The servers are so friendly, so efficient, and so obviously proud to work at the restaurant. That alone would keep us coming back. PS: wine isn't and can't be the primary issue at a restaurant with these amazing tastes, but their wine is good and really complements the meal.

This was my 2nd time dining at Abaca and just like the last the food was phenomenal every dish was packed with flavor. The service is fantastic, very attentive but not intrusive. I noted that the tables nearby were also enjoying their dinner's immensely. Even got to chatting with the table next to ours about how amazing our mutual dinner experiences were. The menu changes seasonally as they try to create there dishes with seasonal local produce as much as possible. The creativity of re imagining traditional Pilipino dishes is extraordinary! For example, they take lumpia to a whole new level. Each bite is a flavor explosion in your mouth. I will be returning for sure!
