34 is Chef Emeril Lagasse’s first restaurant dedicated to the cuisine of his Portuguese heritage. He was inspired by his late mother, Hilda, who influenced his interest in cooking when he was a child growing up in Fall River, MA. The 245-seat restaurant is adorned in shades of green – Emeril’s signature color – wood accents and ornate Portuguese tiles. A painting of a rooster, a national Portuguese symbol of good luck, greets guests at the entrance. Once inside, a jamon bar with countertop service and tile-clad DJ booth are focal points of the space. The restaurant celebrates not only the food and design of Portugal but also the sounds, with music from local and touring DJs.

We were sat at the Jamon Bar even though we had a dining room reservation. Imberio ham had clearly been pre sliced and placed in the walk in for 24hrs before we got it. We started slow bc we couldn’t decided 100% what we wanted. After 5 dishes we decided to leave to go elsewhere. Overall will pause before coming back. Loved the main bar area and that service before we moved to another spot.

Very disappointed in our meal at 34. We had been looking forward to having an authentic Portuguese experience similar to the fabulous food we had while in Lisbon and Sintra in Portugal. First of all we ordered the caldo verde which was OK but it was completely pureed and did not have any distinct potato, or greens with a few very thin slices of chorizo. It tasted OK but was not hot, only warm when served. The pork loin sandwich was tasty but not much more than a slider of pulled pork. (we are from Memphis and get much better pork, fresher and tastier here in town) The croquetes de jamon were the best part of our meal, very crispy on the outside and creamy on the inside with a tiny sliver of Jamon on top. We had the clams and pork which was good and contained a decent amount of pork and clams but when we asked for more bread to "sop" up the juice from the clams, we were brought our 4 very thin slices of crispy, bread with huge holes. We were each charged an additional $1.50 for our extra bread!!! The bacalhau was the biggest disappointment. It was brought to table by server who proceeded to use two table knives to cut thru the serving of what was primarily poached onions, some sort of creamy cheese and caviar on top. By the time the server had cut and rolled over and mashed up the bacalhau ( which was approximately 2 Tablespoons total) it was cool and stringy. Do not get this dish if you expect to get bacalhau with salt cod and potatoes, onions in a delicious cream sauce. I'm not convinced there was any salt cod in the bacalhau we had but the caviar did give it the taste of fish but not mild salt cod. This should be removed from the menu. The surrounding guests were all apparently on expense accounts and that is great but for people who are actually paying for their meals, I would suggest going anywhere else in NOLA for a better meal. Again, we were so looking forward to visiting the new Emeril restaurant but were terribly disappointed.

Great service, menu, cocktails and food. The downside is the credit card processing fee of 3%. The fee is waived if you pay cash.

This was my second time and found everything exceptional as it was before. We even had the unexpected pleasure of having Emeril stop by our table and welcome us and offer some suggestions from the menu. I noticed that he was in the kitchen on the evening that we were there. That was exciting to see, and he was a most gracious host.

I can absolutely see 34 becoming a staple for me in New Orleans. The ambience and décor are stunning—elevated yet welcoming—and the wine selection is vast, featuring an impressive array of Portuguese options that perfectly complement the menu’s influences. The dishes are packed with fresh, vibrant flavors. We started with the freshly baked breads served with homemade butter—an incredible way to begin the meal. The carrots with pine nut cream offered great flavor, though I would have preferred them served warm. The bifana sandwich was hearty with bold flavors, though slightly on the salty side. The Shrimp San Miguel was a standout for me: rich, flavorful, and simply impeccable. My friends ordered the crudo and quite literally left no crumbs. We also shared the paella, served family-style. Its presentation was gorgeous, but the flavors fell a bit short, and there was a mix-up with a dietary preference. However, the manager addressed it promptly and went above and beyond to ensure we were happy. The whole fish was another highlight of the night—my table thoroughly enjoyed it. For dessert, the pineapple pain perdu with pineapple rum caramel sauce was phenomenal; I’d return just for that. The passion fruit gelato was refreshing and delicious, while the chocolate mousse cake was decadent and satisfying. But the true star of the evening was Joe Witkowski, the dining room manager. Joe was attentive, personable, and genuinely passionate about creating an exceptional dining experience. From thoughtful recommendations to his unmatched service, he turned what could have been an ordinary evening into a memorable one. His warmth and professionalism left a lasting impression and are a big part of why I’ll be returning to 34 and singing its praises to anyone who’ll listen. If you visit, make sure to stop by and meet Joe—although I’m confident he’ll find his way to your table to ensure your experience exceeds expectations.

Fantastic food, atmosphere and service. Chris was our server and he had great suggestions, great insight into the menu, and great to talk to. Brittany was the somm and helped pick great wines. We can’t wait to return.
