We have been for afternoon tea before and each time we have had a lovely experience. The staff are always very friendly and attentive. The room was busier than usual but we were made to feel like we were the only people that mattered, which was very nice. Well done everyone.

It was not worth the money for the afternoon tea. The restaurant was dark, and furniture was well worn. There were very few guests, so the atmosphere wasn't very lively. I wanted this to be a special treat for me and my two daughters on our trip to Belfast, but it had no charm, and overall, it was a very average experience.

My husbands birthday, I notified yourselves when booking also our daughter rang from Australia to confirm. We arrived brought to our table told us of phone call from our daughter. A female took the champagne glasses away without being used , we were given menu, told about the cocktails with our afternoon tea, we started looking at the menu to decide which tea to ask for, then the same female approached us no smile not welcoming and stood waiting for the tea choice but we hadn’t even had a chance to browse yet she stood on waiting no smile stern face We ordered quickly, then asked about sandwiches we ordered including salmon the female pointed out not many wants salmon we answered we love salmon the sandwiches arrived no salmon no problem we asked for some the male was great explained everything on the stand. The great room was empty except for 2 other couples no atmosphere that was at 1:15 afternoon. Our daughter from Australia phoned later to ask how things went telling us about champagne and cake as a treat for birthdays she very upset as Eleanor had sent us the coupon. We have been to the Merchant my theme and with our family admittedly some time ago, we loved how your service was the best ever. The female who served us was awful I wonder if she was trying hard to be professional possibly more training as to be nice smile take on constructive criticism from other colleagues and yes she does get wrong as we all do. the main reasons for choosing afternoon tea at the Merchant was for the surroundings , ambience and old fashioned excellence in service and quality of food and I was not disappointed as all the above were indeed excellent.

We had a lovely experience. Completely blown away by the surprise birthday cake that we were served, didn’t expect that and it was a lovely treat. The white tea with yuzu was spectacular.

Took my 87 year old mum to The Merchant for afternoon tea for her birthday with my sons and daughter in law. Very attentive service, lovely food and they brought a wonderful surprise mum for her birthday. She rated it 10/10! Very high praise!
