Opened in the summer of 2010 in Williamsburg, Brooklyn by Motoko Watanabe and Shaul Margulies, House of Small Wonder (HOSW) soon became a popular place for breakfast, lunch and all day brunch and pastries. The new location in Berlin reopened in July 2021 and is located on the quiet Auguststraße. It has a very similar warm atmosphere, lots of wood, lots of plants. The culinary concept follows the footsteps of its Brooklyn café and has numerous Japanese influences: comfort food with organic, local ingredients, freshly prepared with Japanese flavours whenever possible. Homemade bread, croissants and pastries are all freshly baked throughout the day.

Went for brunch at House of Small Wonder with a few friends on the weekend. The service was fast and friendly, the food was tasty and plenty but not as interesting or exceptional as we had hoped after reading the menu. The restaurant is small and nicely decorated, but noise levels are pretty high. They do state in their reservation that you only have the table for 90 minutes, and to our surprise and disappointment they will actually make you leave within 15 minutes of your time-window, which is a shame as we would have loved to enjoy a few more drinks and potentially dessert (which we did, somewhere else). Also, as others have mentioned and the restaurant states when you reserve, they don't allow you to split the bill. Not a dealbreaker for us, but strange nevertheless since most restaurants seem to be fine with this. Overall, it was a good but not amazing experience. We got the impression that they just want funnel as many people as possible through each day and essentially expect you to eat, pay and leave. So while it's nice enough, I don't think we will be returning as it was just not the relaxing experience I would want for my brunch.

Ich hätte gerne vorher gewusst, dass das reservierte Tisch nur für eine begrenzte Zeit benutzt werden kann, weil wir früher dann weggehen mussten und das war etwas schade. Ich hätte auch gerne davor gewusst, dass nur mit einer Rechnung bezahlt werden kann. Das Essen war aber sehr außergewöhnlich, die Bedienung nett, das Lokal schön und insgesamt war alles gut.

Smaak is natuurlijk persoonlijk maar voor ons waren de gerechten niet naar verwachting. Slagroom was door de yoghurt gemixt zonder dat je verschil zag; Thick French Toast was nog net niet aangebrand en het pannetje op tafel had een onaangename geur. Overigens wel lekkere cappuccino! Sfeer was verder goed, erg aardig personeel.

Please change your dog policy and allow dogs to come. Every other restaurant in berlin does and I often choose not to come to yours simply bc I want my dog with me. Besides that I love the place

War eigentlich alles toll, jedoch die „Managerin“, welche nur englisch sprach äußerst arrogant Lies uns am Stehtisch 3 Minuten warten, obwohl alle Tische frei und fertig gedeckt waren. Sag mal geht’s noch?
