  • Good for special occasions
  • Great for creative cocktails
  • Neighbourhood gem
The Barncastle Hotel and Restaurant serves Alsatian-inspired cuisine using local and seasonal ingredients. Chef Owen Royce-Nagel and his wife, both Sommelier- and Cicerone-certified, Lizzie Szczepaniak, have been crafting their concept and menu over the last two decades all across the world. Dishes are intended to be shared and bread (from Tinder Hearth!) is meant to be broken in their cozy dining room and pub. The beverage program features a natural and biodynamic wine list, classic cocktails, and craft Maine beer. Located in the heart of the Blue Hill Peninsula, in between Camden and Acadia National Park, it is the perfect place to gather with friends and family.

Lovely, quaint dinning with great food and great service. I love how small the dinning area was; that kept the noise level to a minimum—old world style dinning.

We dined at Barncastle as locals, our first time. What a delight. Staff were welcoming and you could tell they enjoyed working there. The Alsatian menu was elevated comfort food, with a protein focus. We had wonderful, unique cocktails to start. The bluefish rillettes was delightful, with nice little pieces of fish (not pate-like), with the Tinder Hearth bread gently toasted and a worthy foundation. The bone marrow with tongue was rich and decadent. The rabbit sausage was absolutely delicious, nestled into a parsnip puree and accented with radish and the charred grape salsa, bright notes that countered the richness well. Who can resist a dense dark chocolate dessert? Don't fear the anise ice cream! It was a perfect pairing, not overly sweet or licorice-y. The Luxardo cherries were the best accent. Our server was the best, as she was helpful, knowledgeable, ready with answers to our questions and paid a perfect amount of attention to us, without hovering (or trying to "sell us" on certain items). We live in a nearby town, but will definitely be driving over again soon.

Barncastle is one of the top Blue Hill restaurants in Downeast Maine. The food is classic Alsatian with innovative bursts of surprising flavors. Service is warm and attentive and the atmosphere is charming. Highly recommended!

The new table arrangement in the dining room is more comfortable—Thank You! The Swetha Weathah cocktail is a delicious dessert-first cocktail of spiced rum served frothy and light; The clam chowder is easily a satisfying meal, so creamy and flavorful.

Siting at the cozy bar, I enjoyed a nice French red to accompany a wonderful beet salad, with a bright Meyer lemon note & then continued w/the house made (so flavorful!) venison sausage. I also indulged in their financier for dessert w/home-made ice cream. A lovely meal w/excellent & friendly service.

The menu seems to proffer dishes that sound exotic, with exotic ingredients, but all are comforting and tasty, and should be shared with table-mates, along with a beverage order.

Castle Chowder warms the winter away with some inventive flavor notes; Hash Browns as a crunchy, smothered side dish; Together, they are the best kind of comfort food: for the eye as well as the tastebuds.

A true star on the Maine coast. Star level service - a menu with wonderfully atypical & eclectic offerings you don't see at other modern cuisine restaurants. This is not your typical fancy resort restaurant - but instead a passion of its owners, Owen & Lizzie. If you're in the Blue Hill area, don't miss it.

Always wonderful and very welcoming. Bar tender gal was a bit strange and quite frankly creepy.
