Our service was wonderful - thank you, Melanie and Katie! The staff was helpful, knowledgable and the food was some of the best we've had in Charlottesville. It is an expensive night, but in the category of expensive dinners, this was worth every penny. Everything felt thoughtful - from the description, to the pairings to the presentation.

Nestled on west main street in Charlottesville, Black Cow stands out as an oasis for steak lovers, effortlessly blending sophistication with a warm, inviting ambiance. The moment you step in, you’re enveloped by the rich aromas of wood fire and the promise of great dining experience. The highlight of any visit to Black Cow is, undoubtedly, their happy hour steak. It's not just a meal—it's an event. Perfectly seasoned and cooked to utter perfection, the steak is always a cut above the rest. The steak is always a different cut with a side of a dipping sauce. I don’t eat my steak with the sauce, but it’s a good dip for the fritas AKA fries. Whether you prefer it rare or well-done, each bite promises a harmonious blend of tenderness and robust flavor that leaves you craving more. The chef's and cooks are mastery at their skill, and it is evident in the consistency of the steak's quality. Never less than superb, the happy hour steak is accompanied by a selection of delectable sides and sauces that complement the main dish without overshadowing it. From the crispy, golden fries to the refreshing green salad, every element on the plate is crafted with care and precision. Beyond the exceptional cuisine, Black Cow's attentive staff adds to the overall experience. They are knowledgeable, courteous, and always ready to offer recommendations or answer any questions you might have. The atmosphere is lively yet cozy. In summary, Black Cow's happy hour steak is a testament to culinary excellence, making it a must-try for anyone seeking an unforgettable dining experience. With its unwavering quality and delightful flavors, it’s no surprise that this steak has become the talk of the town.

This charming, intimate venue may be small but delivers an impressive array of mouthwatering meats. We started our meal with a shrimp cocktail with a zesty cocktail sauce that added a delightful kick. For the main course, we indulged in the veal tomahawk, which was spectacular, tender, flavorful, and perfectly cooked; it truly showcased the chef's expertise. The filet mignon was equally impressive; each bite was juicy and melt-in-your-mouth tender, leaving us craving more. On the side, we ordered Brussels sprouts cleverly paired with crisp, sweet apples. This unexpected combination added a refreshing crunch and a hint of sweetness to the dish, transforming a typical veggie plate into something special. By the time we finished our entrées, we were so full that we regretted not having room for dessert. One thing to note, however, is that the wine list was not as extensive as what you typically find in most steakhouses. While it may not have had the overwhelming selection of labels, it featured a thoughtfully curated range that paired well with the meals. Overall, it was a delightful dining experience.

Our second time here and the encore was not as impressive. Simply put two out three was bad, steaks that is. The ribeye was riddled inedible parts leaving sparse areas of the quality beef the price implies. And then that was tough and tasteless to my pallet. My wife’s fillet was much better… a beautiful cut, cooked to perfection, and served just under room temperature. Our Son got the strip and it was as admittedly great. However, we all three came away feeling the experience was … less, than our expectations. Stellar service and lovely people all around. A superb bottle of Chateau Neuf-de-Pape was enjoyed. We will definitely be back with hopes of a better review next time… but this time was a miss
