  • Charming

  • Good for special occasions
Restaurateurs Vittorio Assaf and Fabio Granato opened Brasserie Cognac de Monsieur Ballon in April 2008. The duo brought their love for French culture and cuisine to New York City and gave the Big Apple an authentic slice of such, with a brasserie style menu combining French classics with modern creations.

The quiche was delicious, but the food overall felt overpriced for the portion sizes. For example, a side of fries is $12, and an iced tea is $6 with no free refills—so having two iced teas will set you back $12.

Food was really good (A little over priced, even for NYC standards) but expected for Christmas Day. Service was extremely poor. We came in the morning and wasn’t crazy busy yet. After placing our order and getting food, the next time we seen our server was when he brought us our ticket…Never had a refill on coffee or even got any water…He made a point to say we didn’t have to leave a tip because it was already added (20%)…Management needs to train servers on how to service a table with customers…Merry Christmas!

Several members of my family had a holiday brunch here on what turned out to be an EXTREMELY cold day. Even though they have a dual door system (both heavy) with a vestibule between them about 10 feet long, every time the door opened there was a noticeable reduction in temperature throughout the restaurant. It is a a traditional French brasserie and the food is quite good. The service was very attentive. It was quite pricy for what was offered, though.

It was an awful experience, and the staff was as rude as anyone could be.

This was my most disappointing experience at the restaurant. The eggs Benedict were incorrectly poached. The french fries were not hot. The only redeeming thing was the chocolate soufflé at the end.

This was our third time eating at Brasserie Cognac Midtown - we've loved our prior experiences, hence the third visit. We had a reservation for 11:45 on a Sunday - prime brunch time. It took 20 minutes for someone to acknowledge us standing there (not hyperbole). Once we were seated, service was slow and standoffish. Our food arrived cold and we waited longer than the tables around us (we were a four top, there was a party of six nearby and also two two tops). Overall it was a mediocre experience that was not worth the time or the price.
