Restaurateurs Vittorio Assaf and Fabio Granato opened Brasserie Cognac de Monsieur Ballon in April 2008. The folks were kind and fun and made my daughter's birthday special. The fondu was incredible., the fries perfect. It took a pretty long time to get the main courses and by the time they came, a lot of it was cold and the kids didn't eat it. I asked to have my burger heated up, land et him know we were on a time crunch, but he said they would remake it- which was kind, but took more time. The desserts also took a lot of time, so much so that they covered the cost. Despite this, it was a wonderful place, perfect for folks who enjoy a cool atmosphere and are hoping to lounge for a good 2-3 hours.

We enjoyed Cognac, its a nicely decored place that brings you to Paris. Service was good and the waiter was delightful. The French Onion soup was not great, ok. I enjoyed the Beouf Bourgonion, though i did not like that they substituted brussel sprouts for the pearl onions. The steak frites was pretty ordinary. Overall I liked Cognac, its a pretty good value considering how absurd prices have become. I gave it 4 out of 5 because they had no specials, out of creme brulee, out of croque monsieur. Maybe with the holidays they under stocked the kitchen.

Service was a little rushed, main course turned up about 10 minutes after our starters but our waiter was charming. Food was mostly good. My chicken paillard was reminiscent of airline chicken, but my husband loved the moules frites and the profiteroles were awesome. Wine was around $20 a glass.

The beef tartar was amazing, highly recommend. The cheese fondue was really disappointing, when it was brought out it wasn’t warm and they brought it back to be warmed up. The cheese seized and it was clumpy and lumpy. Texture was awful. The signature salad was also disappointing. There was a lot of chicken but it was dry and the dressing was very bland. I would not recommend.

We had a good table for 4 in the back which allowed for a comfortable conversation at 5.30pm. Older people may need to bring phone flashlight to properly read the menu as the lighting is ambiently lit.

Fantastic Octopus salad and Gougeres (as starter). Great quality French food at reasonable prices (for New York City). Only downside was the service - we ordered a side of fries which came out even before our appetizers were served…

Great experience had the calamari, escargot, halibut, mussels and miso cod. All cooked perfectly. Only complaints were that it was very loud, so dark I could barely read the menu and cod could have used more miso. Would definitely return !
