The scallops as a starter were 3 very small offerings. The mains I had was the venison, it was tough and stringy, difficult to cut and eat, the gnocchi were hard and all the food including the plate were cold. Had we not had guests I would have sent it back. The chocolate pudding was excellent. My wife's fish pie ok. My friend had haggis which was fine and his wife has venison but did not comment on it. Overall for me disappointing

We booked last minute for lunch on 17 December and got a table at Cafe Royal for 1430 hours. We enjoyed sharing the sourdough with crab butter and then my wife had sun blushed tomato sandwich with avocado and rosemary tinged fries. I went for the classic fish and chips. House white wine was delicious. A very pleasant experience and an enjoyable way to spend an hour in the week before Christmas in the oldest oyster bar in Scotland!

Recommended. Relatively small restaurant with an intimate feel. Our menu choices were 1st class and service was attentive without being overbearing.

Not the service we expect from the Cafe Royale. Colleague who took us to our table did not greet us and was quite rude, no smile, nothing. He had a grey waistcoat on. A bit disappointing. Cocktails where lovely though and food was nice.

Lovely atmosphere, nice food. Service wasn't what I expected. We were half way through our meal before we reminded them we'd not had our drinks, one of which was a pre dinner cocktail. All was quickly remedied and the pre dinner drinks were quickly swapped for a glass of wine.

The baked camembert shared starter was excellent. Our main courses were left standing on the counter for at least 5 minutes, consequently arrived at the table cold. We asked for them to be heated up, they were taken away for about 10 minutes and brought back still cold. After that, we gave up.

Very cold restaurant, seared scallop starter was lukewarm. Main course and dessert were good. Poor experience overall.

A fantastic lunch and great service - one minor point was that when I booked it didn’t offer me an option to chose from a Christmas menu .. nevertheless it didn’t distract from a superb experience
