Our experience at Canoe House was outstanding from start to finish. From the warm welcome by the hostess to the delicious cocktails, appetizers, and dinner, everything was exceptional. We were celebrating our 35th anniversary and were given a wonderful table at the edge of the dining area, closest to the beachfront. The ambiance, food, and service were all excellent. I had the fried chicken topped with honey, and my husband enjoyed the daily market fish—both were fantastic. However, there was one small detail that was missing: no toast or dessert with a candle to mark the occasion. While I didn’t necessarily need dessert, a small gesture to celebrate the milestone would have made us feel truly special. I had mentioned our anniversary both in my reservation and to the hostess, noting that this was our fifth year in a row celebrating at Canoe House. Unfortunately, there was no acknowledgment, which left me a little disappointed. That aside, everything else was superb, and we truly enjoyed our evening.

The staff was very friendly however food and drink did take 20+mins to arrive. The food was overpriced considering the flavors weren’t that great specifically for the main dishes. They were also out of two of the main dishes, one of which my husband had already ordered. We were offered a free dessert to make up for it but would have appreciated a discount since we didn’t end up ordering dessert.

Thanks to our wonderful waiter, Dustin, who was able to explain the new changes to the menu, especially the gluten free options. We were able to enjoy some favs as well as try something new! We decided to split five menu items for the two of us. All five were a thumbs up, and all could be altered if necessary to be gluten free. What a treat! We shared the snap peas with goat cheese, pine nuts and mint. Yum. The corn ribs with truffle butter are so good. The Kekala Farm salad was unique with its edamame dressing and chili oil. Very large salad, so way to split. We loved the fingering potatoes with mustard and a soft cooked egg on top. The catch of the day was mahi mahi in a delicious ume butter sauce. Two pieces! The kimchi with the fish was served on the side as it had gluten. My husband thought it was a little too spicy, and would order the fish without next time. We skipped dessert as the only gluten free option that sounded good included a coffee crust and would have to be altered. Need to find more options there, but we were really full so it was ok! Dustin explains everything and gives great advice. We skip drinks because of super high prices, and just eat more food and drink later! Beautiful night. Can’t wait to go back just like we have done for over thirty years!

Should enforce a non yoga pants and tennis shoes dress code (beach sandals ok). Parents need to use better judgement about how their children behave and disrupting other diners. We had one child nearby us that was very loud and disruptive of ambiance. Another child near us was no problem and quiet.

The CanoeHouse is a magical place. If you’re staying on the Kohala coast, I recommend trying to get a reservation. The service is some of the best on the island.

We were too late for sunset but still beautiful location. Service was great and food matched. Ahi and Onaga were fresh and served perfectly. I usually get seafood when in Hawaii but if you like meat the Akaushi strip was amazing! Definitely share it but it’s worth the price. If I had to nitpick the wine prices were steep, especially by the glass but the selections are all nice wines so more of a heads up than complaint.
