It was absolutely so loud, we didn’t get water for 15 minutes of being there. Our whole experience was quite manic

Upon arrival we entered the hustling and bustling restaurant to check in only to be told to return outside to the pavement in front of Grill, the jointly owned neighbouring establishment, 'where the laptop was'. We were then promptly instructed to sit outside as inside dining was full (noticeable untrue). The outside seating was without heating (it was 11 degrees) and without light, so not dissimilar to camping. We were having none of this so pursued a waitress with intent and after 10 mins we were finally seated inside at 2 small round tables pushed together. It felt like an achievement. We were full of hope. After asking for menus we made our selections and then waited. And waited. As the odd waitress scampered past I was able to eventually flag one down to take our order, including a bottle of wine. Things were looking up when napkins, cutlery and Diet Coke arrived. As did two wine glasses. Time passed. Bread and oil arrived. Then another small entree. We could see our bottle of wine, unopened, behind us on the counter. We managed to flag down the same scampering waitress to ask if we could please have our wine. She collected it, presented it for inspection at the table and then inexplicably returned it to the counter. As the entree was consumed, Simone decided to take matters into her own hands and got up, retrieved the bottle and asked a bar staff for a bottle opener to open it herself. Mysteriously a waitress arrived to open the bottle and in her haste left much of the foil seal around the opening and proceeded to just pour the wine over it, into the glass. Suddenly and unexpectedly, another waitress implored us to move tables, which involved shifting ourselves and one small table and chair across the floor. Not to mention everything ON the table

We booked inside but got placed outside. There are heaters and umbrellas which could be problematic when raining.

I booked on line and it only gave me the opportunity to book outside (found this out after the booking was made and when the confirmation was received). Rang to please request an inside table as I had interstate business travellers and I was keen to take them to a great Melbourne restaurant. The lady assured me that it would be no trouble and I would have a table inside against my booking. When we arrived there was no table inside for us. After a wait tables were put together for us .. but right at the door. It was cold and draughty and I was a little embarrassed about the whole situation as I thought everything would be in order for our early Dinner. The food was good. The wait staff were lovely and tried there best to assist.

Poor service. Main meals were not edible. Pasta tough and chewy. Veal overcooked and oily. Could barley cut the veal. Calamari was delicious. Wine was great. Staff were clearly stressed and red zoning.

Service was terse from some, ok from Others. Definitely not the charm it used to have. More rough and ready. Food was nice without being amazing. Kind of like the restaurant is resting on its laurels. Having ordered this also via Providoor that is probably preferable for next time.

Pretty disappointed to be honest. Service was very poor. Had to ask 4 times for ordered focaccia. Had to ask twice for ordered salad. I was just after a simple meal done right and in the correct order without having to look around aimlessly trying to get service staff attention.

We were asked to change tables after we had been seated and then were moved inside (despite being advised by this site that no inside tables were available). The meals arrived in a timely manner and were good despite no vegetables or salad, which required the ordering of additional sides. Despite advising staff we had had limited time when we ordered our coffee at the end of the meal we waited 15 mins before we had to cancel the order and leave. When asked by the staff how things had been we explained and they became defensive citing that they were short staffed on the night. I appreciate the situation of staff absences however if the restaurant is unable to provide adequate service to its customers then perhaps not overbook and the staff certainly should not expect to be tipped for their ‘lack of service’. We regularly have dinner at Cellar Bar prior to seeing a show and have had great experiences there, consequently we were so looking forward to our Saturday evening. Unfortunately we will probably not return to Cellar Bar and will try one of the many other restaurants in our wonderful city.
