  • Charming
  • Good for special occasions
  • Neighbourhood gem
The last of its kind near 42nd Street, Chez Josephine is a neighborhood gem founded in 1986 by Jean-Claude Baker as a tribute to legendary Josephine Baker. This Parisian bistro offers live piano music and a tantalizing menu in an intimate setting of red velvet walls, a cavalcade of chandeliers and a blue-tin ceiling. Guests receive a warm welcoming and are treated as family whether coming before a show, after the show, for a leisurely dinner in-between, or a drink at the bar.

Chez Josephine draws a crowd unlike any other in New York as food critic Bryan Miller noted when he wrote: “The dining room is a confluence of the famous and the fashionable, the infamous and unsung – with every shade of skin on earth – and indeed you feel the magic of Chez Josephine.”

I’m not from NYC ; so, I’m not sure if it qualifies as a hidden gem, but I searched the reviews of numerous restaurants before making reservations. I am happy to say that it was a wonderful dining experience. My friends have already booked another visit. Cheers!

Great restaurant for a date, very cute decor and the music around, makes it a very lovely and romantic evening. The food was amazing, very delicious dishes. I went in for Valentine’s day and had the 3 course dinner, filet mignon was very tasty and the scallops as well.

We’ve eaten here many times and it was always wonderful but tonight when we arrived there was a huge line of people waiting to be be seated. We all had reservations but no tables. No one was there to welcome us or seat us. We waited for thirty minutes and no one got a table. We finally left. It ruined our Valentine’s Day.

I made a reservation for a special San Valentine’s dinner, but the evening quickly turned sour. Our server pressured us to finish our meals rapidly to accommodate other guests—even though we had a confirmed reservation—which set a rushed tone for the night. Adding insult to injury, we were seated right next to a busy hallway where a constant flow of people disrupted our dining experience. We were then told to place our entire order—appetizers, drinks, and even dessert—all at once, leaving little room to enjoy the meal at a natural pace. The server’s attitude was far from professional; not only was he rude, but he also managed to stain my shirt while serving wine, an experience I found completely unacceptable. The food, which I had hoped would redeem the evening, proved to be equally disappointing. I requested my meat medium, yet it was overcooked, and the accompanying potatoes were underdone. To top it off, the bill came to a staggering $700 for four people, a price that was completely unjustified by the poor service and subpar food quality. Overall, what was meant to be a memorable evening ended up feeling rushed, unprofessional, and overpriced. I hope the management takes these concerns seriously, as this is not the kind of experience I would ever recommend.

Only positives were the live music and the decor. Both beautiful. The food was BLAND and overpriced for a pre fix menu. Service was just okay.

The ambiance was perfect -low lighting, balloons on the table, piano player in the background. We liked the price fix menu options. Only the scallops were disappointing-chewy and not sweet. The crab cake, beet salad, sea bass and desserts were all delicious . Lana, our server, was gracious and attentive. My old fashioned tastes great but I prefer the kind with one big ice cube.

For Josephine Baker admirers and francophiles it was a lovely dinner spot with soft piano & French songs/music, and good French classics for the meal. Nice wine list and cocktails! It is definitely romantic and has Josephine’s signature all around the place. We will go back again.

We went for a birthday lunch. The experience was amazing with the loud performance. It made my friends day very special. The food was delicous and the timing of each course was perfect.
