   Slow table service to start but they recovered it and picked it up. I enjoyed my food- husband didn’t enjoy his Tuna nicoise as dressing was dolloped under a lettuce leaf and he didn’t see it until he gave up on his dry salad and someone else spotted it.

   Always a safe choice as the food is always excellent and the staff very attentive without being overbearing. The portions however are small if you opt for the 2 course “Fixe Prix” or the Sunday French Lunch. We chose Steak Frite for the 2-course and the steak was small, as was the portion of fries. For the Sunday French Lunch, which is for two at just over £52, we had the steak. Again, the portion was small but more surprising was the size of the side dishes. The tenderstem broccoli, cauliflower au gratin and confit potatoes were beautifully cooked, but really only enough for one, and we are not big eaters, but we had to order more. There was only 6 cubes of confit potatoes! I suspect this is to encourage people to order a starter as well as a dessert. We had the dessert, again, beautifully prepared, but we left the restaurant feeling slightly underfed. My other gripe is how some staff are not in uniform. There was somebody in jeans for goodness sake. Côtes is not a Michelin-starred restaurant but it is of a higher standard than your usual chain restaurants, so as someone who in the past has worked in this industry and understands the standards, they should be far more consistent. The staff are excellent, formal yet not stuffy, and when visiting, patrons want to feel they are somewhere a little bit more special than the average chain restaurant. An inconsistent staff dress code lets it down. Good, but could do better.

   Lovely food and the staff were excellent. We went for my mum’s 80th birthday and they noted this, put a banner on the wall and gave her a brownie with candle in on the house. Such a lovely touch. Very impressed.
