About this restaurant

  • Good for special occasions
  • Charming
  • Dog-friendly
Located just outside Chichester, at the heart of the Goodwood Estate, Farmer, Butcher, Chef celebrates the beef, pork, and lamb reared at Goodwood Home Farm. Aptly named, the farmer, butcher, and chef collaborate to discuss the available cuts of meat, which are featured in our hearty Butcher’s Boards and a constantly changing seasonal menu.

Awarded two AA Rosette's, it has a relaxed atmosphere with quintessentially British interiors by Leveson Design. With a bar and beautiful courtyard where you can enjoy live music and BBQs throughout the summer months, alongside a full calendar of events, the restaurant is a space to enjoy exceptional food with friends, family and dogs are very welcome too.

Goodwood has been farmed by the Dukes of Richmond for over 300 years. Susan, Duchess of Richmond was one of the Soil Association’s earliest members. Her belief in organic food and animal welfare were instrumental in Goodwood Home Farm becoming the first 100% organically fed dairy in the country.

Farmer, Butcher, Chef restaurant was a great place, although the service was pretty poor. I had to wait 20 mins for a drink I ordered from the table and we ordered ice for my wife's wine, twice, had to go to the bar and get some ourselves in the end. Food was ok, the lamb burger was quite dry as we were not offered any condiments at all, no sauce or vinegar for the chips.

Service was patchy. Our drinks were served when the main course arrived and our bill was incorrect and had to be reissued. The food was nothing special and expensive for the size of the portions that we received. Finally we were plagued by flies which when it was mentioned to the serving staff we received the reply "because we are near to the farm". We won't be returning.

The ambience is nice. Please make sure your staff stay careful with those who have to have gluten free food for coeliac reasons.

Reviewing for 2 meals I ate here Friday & Saturday. First the negative my layer potato side dish was slightly under cooked but tasty. The good A good honest eatery within Goodwood! Visited during Goodwood festival of speed & it was busy… very busy! Staff were all young but attentive, fun, and provided great service even though hotel & restaurant extremely busy. I would recommend anyone to visit for good food, service & ambience. Will be back again!

I cannot fault the food. It was delicious. But it took a ridiculously long time to get something to eat. Our table was booked for 6:30. It took an age to get the starters out and I looked at my watch at 7:50 and we still hadn't had our main courses. Not sure I'd go back, and if I did I'd probably have dinner first to tide me over!

I was there for dinner on the first night we arrived and stayed at the hotel. We were excited to try the farm to table concept and have ordered the platter to be shared by two of us, the hogget and the red beef rump for rest of the table from their summer menu. The hogget (except the deep fried pieces) and beef rump were both very tough. The platter’s beef and pork were equally tough, despite the beautiful presentation. The sides of the platter were overly seasoned. The saving grace was the dessert - strawberry soufflé and baked Alaska were outstanding.

A very disappointing “flagship” restaurant. We ordered the “Butcher’s Board” which seemed to be the preferred choice. 30 minutes in, the table next to us was seated. 1 hour in, we were being very British about not wanting to make a fuss, just presuming as all food was cooked to order it would take longer than usual. However, then the table next to us was being served their food, a Butcher’s Board! Now ready to complain and ask where our food was, 2 plates were placed in front of us. After a few minutes more waiting, a waitress came out and told us there was a mix up in the kitchen and said that they had not made our order and started serving us an alternative from the set-menu instead. Telling us that us that this was to keep us going until they made out main meal! Obviously not wanting 2 main meals we said we would just eat this. It was disappointing to say the least, the meats were just warm and all the sides offered were cold (though apparently that was correct, weird). At no point did they ask us if everything was Ok as they were doing to all the other tables. They did say the meal was complementary, but the whole affair spoiled the evening. Roll on breakfast. Would you believe it the same happened. We were shown to our table and our room number taken. 10 minutes in we had to grab a waitress to take our breakfast order. We saw 2 other tables come in, place their orders and were served before we started to complain. We collared a waitress, she rushed off to the kitchen and then rushed back to talk to her colleagues in the main restaurant, all the time with them glancing over at us. This made us very uncomfortable and it was very clear our breakfast ordered had not been placed. It now felt very personal so we walked out. Complaining again at checkout they removed the breakfast charge from the bill and also removed the pudding costs from the night before. Very much appreciated, but we for sure will not be returning.
