Between the central locale afforded by its gracious home in the landmark Lord Elgin Hotel, a warm and yet contemporary ambience, a locally sourced menu and a casual-to-sophisticated stocked cellar, Forty-One has become one of Ottawa’s top new restaurants.

Named Forty-One in recognition of the year, 1941, that the Lord Elgin was built, the restaurant features a modern environment and classic menu that is a perfect match for connecting with new and familiar faces. Guests are able to relax in the inviting lounge with flat screen TVs and large windows overlooking Elgin Street or enjoy an intimate dinner or a group get together in the dining area. With a capacity of close to 150, the restaurant features booths and banquette seating to allow flexibility to accommodate guest needs whether they are popping in for lunch, a quick after-work cool-down, a pre-theatre warm-up or an evening night cap. Forty-One also includes a private dining room for up to 30 guests.

Went for dinner and to hear a jazz concert. The restaurant was full but the staff handled it incredibly well. Food was excellent. A great night out.

Excellent service, cocktails , and appetizers in this upscale setting in the beautiful Lord Elgin hotel was a perfect to start to our night out for a concert at the National Arts Centre just across the street. The mushroom toast was delicious and the egg roll bites were fun.

Had never been to the restaurant. Pleasantly surprised. Lovely atmosphere and great food. Our waiter was very attentive and friendly. We will go back and I’ve told my friends to try it out.

Our reservation was for 11:30am ahead of a 1pm show at the NAC. We were given breakfast menus and when I asked for lunch menus I was told rather rudely that the kitchen would not serve lunch until 12nn. It took over half an hour for 2 orders of eggs Benny and one omelette to be served, without garnishes or sides. The plates looked really bare. A disappointing experience.

Overall we had a negative experience. It started with a relatively empty restaurant but we had to wait a few minutes at the seating stand before anyone showed up to seat us. Once seen the hostess seemed confused on where to seat us. Our server was rarely at our table. They were gone for at least 30 minutes at one point. We were served water and 1 round of drinks. We went through the water and drinks relatively quickly. The drinks were never offered to be refreshed and the waters were eventually refilled by someone else completely after our meals were finished. One of our party was never given part of her meal. The food was ok at best: 2 of the dishes were decent and the other 2 were missing parts or overcooked. Towards the end of the meal a small music group set up right behind us and while the music was nice, it was too loud for a small area.
