Nominated for Best New Restaurant and Best Chef in the James Beard Awards, Gado Gado is an Indonesian-focused restaurant in Portland’s Hollywood neighborhood serving an eclectic menu that derives flavors from owners Thomas and Mariah Pisha-Duffly’s cultural heritage, travels, and culinary backgrounds.

In addition to an extensive à la carte food and drink menu, groups are invited to indulge in a bountiful family-style, chef’s choice Rice Table dinner — Gado Gado’s interpretation of the Dutch-Indonesian “Rijsttafel” feast.

Why they're an Icon

Executive chef: Thomas Pisha-Duffly

From the OpenTable editors: James Beard Award-nominated Gado Gado is what celebratory dreams are made of, thanks to owners Thomas and Mariah Pisha-Duffly’s colorful Indonesian feasts. Order hit dishes like the flaky Malaysian roti à la carte, or go all in on the family-style “rice table” experience for a sampling of curries, grilled meats, and clove-scented rice served on vintage plates. Enjoy it all in the charming dining room with custom bird-and-fish wallpaper or on the outdoor patio with patterned rugs and tablecloths.

Both my wife and I had their signature Rice Table at $89/person. This is a good way to sample most of the available dishes on the a la cart menu. The food is similar to tapas style with each dish coming out proportion to the number of the guests at the table. They are very respectful of asking the diners of any food allergy. All of the dishes are very tasty with the notable Chinese sausage & shrimp siu mai, wok fried herb omelette, and Sumatran style beef Randang. The only gripe we have is that most of the dishes came out either lukewarm or at room temperature. Not sure if that is intentional or our portion is simply a part of the Rice Tables ordering of other diners in the restaurant ordering at the same time. The dining room and the restroom have eclectic decors which created an otherworldly experience. In short, we would go again and consider trying pescatarian Rice Table next time.

Service was impeccable, wait time for everything was low and my girlfriend and i really felt like the staff went out their way to make our Valentine’s Day dinner special. Drinks were absolutely stellar, the Jell-O shots are always worth it and a great way to start the night. I got a drink with seaweed and whiskey that I was a little apprehensive to try because it sounded weird but it was one of our favorite flavors of the night. The roti and blistered tomato curry are what dreams are made of, and the beef tartare is NOT to be missed! Gado Gado is one of the best spots in town and the rice table is so much you will keep thinking about it for a while.

My husband was born and raised in the Netherlands, where Indonesian food is plentiful due to all the immigrants from Indonesia. He thought the meal at Gado Gado was very authentic and exquisitely done, but with a few creative twists added. We had the Rice Table which was a generous amount of food. It is a bit pricey but we will definitely go there again for special occasions.

SO impressed with everything - even the Jello-O shots were elevated and DELICIOUS. But the food was seriously incredible. Chicken satay was perfect, the rendang brought me back to Bali, and the siu mai was so flavorful. PLUS the drinks were so unique…. The love triangle had olive oil drops on the top that was to die for. Will definitely be back!

Fantastic service and food. We had the shrimp chips with peanut sauce, pani puri, and fritters to start; and the sate, squash curry, rice, and roti for mains. Also the killer donuts for dessert! Everything was perfect (as usual), delicious and beautifully presented. I love that you can 100pct count on Gado Gado always delivering a great experience.
