Set in the heart of the Western Lake District, Honest Lawyer restaurant occupies a magnificent Grade II listed building that was previously the town’s old courthouse cells. Many Tudor inspired original features have survived the years, making it the perfect setting for a truly unique dining experience in one of the most enchanting locations imaginable. Once you have descended down the stone carved stairway and walked across the river side balcony to the lilting sound of the River Cocker, a warm Cumbrian welcome awaits you in our Cockermouth restaurant.

My partner and I have travelled from Liverpool for a weekend in the Lakes. We stopped here in Cockermouth on our way through having booked a table with yourselves through OpenTable. I even confirmed yesterday when contacted by OpenTable. We arrived this evening, closed…..? My contact details were provided, I’ve not been contacted, and there was no explanation offered. After traipsing round Cockermouth I’ve finally found somewhere to eat, and told that you are now closed by another restaurant manager. To not have the decency to contact a customer to say you are closed is appalling. It would take 30seconds of your time and cost literally nothing. If a customer just chose not to turn up you would be slating them.

We had burgers which were really tasty but one was meant to be gluten free. Unfortunately they mixed up the top and bottom of the buns meaning neither was presented properly. Staff did apologise but no discount on bill was offered.

We were very disappointed with our visit to the Honest Lawyer. We could have complained but didn't want to spoil our evening. It was felt the staff were very inexperienced, the food was tasteless and bland; definitely not the usual food we have eaten here before. The ambiance of the place felt different than before and we really didn't feel welcome. We were a party of 6. 4 of us had the duck and 2 the cod. The duck was very tough and not cooked quite enough, oozing with blood. The cod dish was tasteless and bland. The picture on Facebook of the duck dish was nothing like the dish we were served; we were short of vegetables. It didn't taste like duck but of blood. We would advise using a little more seasoning and ensure the food tastes good before being served. The crushed potatoes were horrible and definitely no seasoning added. All we can say is; the issues are probably caused through badly trained staff and shortages of skilled and experienced hospitality staff probably due to Covid and Brexit. We appreciate that the hospitality industry has been badly affected but it was poor vale for money and not a good experience. Very sad to say we wont be back.

The Honest Lawyer is some where we held in high regard, and would go here to celebrate certain occasions, anniversaries, birthdays etc. Unfortunately, since our last visit a few months ago, the menu had changed and losing that french/indian cuisine it was know for. We ordered our drinks, and the food. The wine came no problem, but 45 minutes after placing the order, we were told that the order had not gone through due to Wifi problems and they would put it through now. Another 20 mins passed, and no food arrived and we were informed that it still hadn't gone through due to the same problem, and they were working on our meal. The meal arrive an hour and a half after our arrival. The food that was served was incredibly salty. The cheese sauce for the steak seemed to be curdled, and too much salt. Equally for the duck, the skin was fatty and wobbly, instead of being crispy and golden, and still incredibly salty. We were compensated with a free large glass of wine, but equally this wasn't great and we left it. The wait staff both apologised for the issues. We paid £70 for a very sub-standard meal and service. We promptly left after having our main, and sadly, we will not be returning to the restaurant.

Unluckily the table we had was near the toilets and the main walk through. There was a large blob of tomato ketchup on the table when I moved the candle which was disappointing in these Covid cleaning times. The ‘real ale’ advertised consisted of a very cold pale hoppy option which was a disappointing. The tables outside by the water in more clement weather must be very nice. We didn’t stay for dessert.

Food OK, but we were sat at a table looking at an old beer keg, stored chairs and a sweeping brush, very sad looking place with no atmosphere whatsoever.
