Located in the historic Fulton Market district of Chicago’s West Loop neighborhood, il Carciofo is a Roman Italian restaurant drawing inspiration from the restaurants and markets in one of Chef Joe's favorite cities, Rome. The restaurant offers a seasonal menu of elevated yet familiar Italian fare with traditional antipasti, Roman-style pizzas, hand-rolled pastas produced daily in a dedicated pasta lab and market-driven mains that highlight the season's bounty.

It was fine. Service was pretty slow and they brought out one dish at a time for four people. I know they pace the meal for you but if a table orders multiple anti-pasta dishes and pastas it would make sense to bring out the dishes in each section together instead of one at a time. The carbonara was amazing as was the suppli pesto but the rest were just alright. I don’t think this new restaurant compares to Rosemary.

Overall, the food was fresh though there was nothing I had that quite fully hit the mark. The suppli ragu was pretty good, though I was left wanting for more tomato/acid/sauce. My partner enjoyed the lamb appetizer, but it wasn’t for me. I had the ravioli pasta and while it was fresh, it was under-seasoned. It’s not a place with salt on the table, so it wasn’t an easy fix. The rigatoni with the Calabrian chilis had a nice proper kick to it in the sauce for those who enjoy heat - but quickly felt one note. The boulevardier cocktail we ordered was much more Campari forward than whiskey forward, making for a weaker drink than we typically encounter for that choice (and price). The dessert options weren’t very compelling for us. The berries dessert was just ok. The chocolate gelato was decent and the portion of it was much larger than expected or desired. The best part was the service. Eric was a lovely presence; and the lady who was helping to clear plates and fill water was very attentive without being overbearing. When the bill came, the total cost just didn’t feel like a value for what we got. With tip, we landed around $220, which is a lot to pay for a meal for two that you weren’t very satisfied with. For perspective, I’d happily pay that with no remorse at chef Flamm’s other restaurant Rosemary any day. I don’t feel compelled to return to this spot, though.

Very bright and couldn’t hear any music. The pastas were good but the meat dishes were a bit on the tough side. I’d stick to pasta and pizza here!

Pastas were the highlight here. Portions were on the smaller side for the price.

Promising new restaurant still working out the kinks. We ordered 6 items. 3 were great, 1 was good, 2 were inedible. The great: Lamb Rib, Kale salad with Anchovy vinaigrette, and the pistachio gelato. The good: Pesto Gnocchi - very flavorful, slightly undercooked The Bad: Sautéed Calamari - very fishy flavor, served lukewarm, the Oxtail tagliatelle - heavily over salted, couldn’t have more than one bite. They made it right by taking the calamari and tagliatelle off our bill. Overall seems like they’re still dialing their process in.

We went during Valentine’s Day and had the prix fixe menu. There was nothing wrong with the food - all of it was great - but the value was just not there. Ordered separately from the menu, since all are normal items, the cost would have been $50-60 less per couple. We’re going to go back, but I would steer clear of any special events here since the markup seems a bit egregious.

Everything was amazing. My husband and I went for Valentine’s Day. It was a 4 course meal. Everything was delicious and the temperature of the food was always perfect!

We went to Il Carciofo for dinner on Valentine’s Day. Least romantic evening ever. It was crowded, loud and rushed. We had the valentines price fix menu. We didn’t even have our drinks yet and they delivered the first course! They hovered over us on each course trying to clear plates and deliver the next course before we finished. Fastest meal I have ever consumed. Won’t be back.
