About this restaurant

  • Vegetarian-friendly
  • Good for groups
  • Charming
“In Syrian culture, we can’t make any journey without first planning the food. If you decide to go to the cinema, you plan what you’ll eat. If you plan to visit your mother, you know that you’re going to eat. There’s no going out without eating something.”

-Imad Alarnab

Imad Alarnab was a successful restaurateur in Damascus with three restaurants, plus several juice bars and cafes. In the war, Imad's restaurants were destroyed and he was forced to flee the country in search of safety for his family. Making his way from Lebanon through Europe, Imad shared his skills cooking for other refugees, up to 400 at a time, and found even in the most challenging times, his passion for food and bringing people together to celebrate life was strong.

Loves the food and staff really good, however we were put behind a curtain in what felt like a staff meeting. I appreciate these things need to happen but there seemed plenty of other tables available we could have been sat at.

I arrived very early for my table and they graciously accommodated me. However, as I was due early in the evening, I’m not sure it was that much of an inconvenience for them as I arrived at an almost empty restaurant. I was seated at a counter, no other options. Any restaurant offering counter seats should expressly state this. I did not reserve a different restaurant that evening as only counter seating was available. The menu was interesting and the food was good. It did all come together - pita, mezze and large plate. I sent the large back to be kept warm. The wines were predominantly Greek, which was fine. The cocktail was pleasant. The young male server on my ‘counter’ was wonderful; pleasant and attentive without being too intrusive, but the female server who plopped my food and drinks needs some work. The restaurant got very busy by the time I left (still early) so this is a good sign, but there were some tables still free that I could have be assigned. Anyway, overall a pleasant experience with decent food. The lamb with greens and sweet potato could have been from anywhere. Otherwise, interesting regional food. Is this a Bib Gourmand level restaurant? I don’t see it!

Food was great - really fresh food, bold flavours. The restaurant was very busy but service was good. Went for a casual birthday lunch - not disappointed at all. Would definitely return.

Faultless. It has been a while since I was last there, and it has expanded, but it was still fairly full even on a midweek lunchtime.
