The Kaisho Tiki Takeover, a new patio space, offers a tropical escape for outdoor diners, complete with string lights, tiki torches, and straw umbrellas. The menu features heartier items like the Kaisho Burger, and smaller bites such as Kushiyaki from the binchotan, including Jidori chicken, A5 Wagyu, and plant-based options like shishito peppers and eggplant. To round out the experience, beverage options include Japanese-inspired milkshakes, alcoholic and non-alcoholic housemade ice pops, and tiki cocktails, including two frozen options: Don’t Forget Your Banana Hammock made with light rum, brandy, banana liqueur, pineapple juice, housemade falernum, and banana syrup; and Sunshine In Hokkaido made with barrel-aged cachaca, pineapple rum, cream of coconut, pineapple cinnamon shrub, and brown rice simple syrup.

The simple fact that they were promoting an outdoor tiki patio was a lie and misleading promotional effort. There is no tiki patio. A few wobbly tables are set up in front of their nice restaurant on the sidewalk near the loud expressway and there were no tiki light, no straw umbrellas, and no ambiance at all. I should have left but we were trying to celebrate a birthday and we decided to stay. It was laughable. The staff was great but that's it. 25.00 burgers. Yakitori was average and one came out undercooked. Super expensive and not worth it. We also brought a cake and they charged us 30.00 to cut 6 slices. Bill for 6 people was 400.00 and we felt cheated and mislead by their ads. I know places are trying to figure out the situation with cover, but this setup they had is very hurtful to their business and they need to re-think things. A total ripoff.

The food is good however, the server needs to learn to socially distance herself more she was too close explaining menu items. I’ve been to other restaurants and the servers stand 6 feet away doing what I outlined above or perhaps she should wear a face-shield.

This review is solely for the tiki pop up concept, not the typical menu. Everything was very tasty and the service was exceptional. I’ve never had tempura French fries and they were just as crunchy and delicious as you might imagine. The burger was incredibly umami and the pickles cut thru the fat really nicely.

The amount of food we received was so minimal I thought it was a joke in comparison to the amount of our bill (about $450 before tip for 6 people). On the patio we were limited to the ‘patio menu’, which consisted of mini, baby-sized skewers consisting of 4-5 tiny bites of food. Barely even an appetizer. I do not eat meat, which I informed my server of. We asked how many skewers would make a full meal per person and was told 4. I ordered eggplant and tofu. Needless to say, I required dinner elsewhere after. My server was ‘reprimanded’ by their manager for providing me a dirty martini because it was not explicitly on their patio menu. I will never return to this restaurant.

While I understand that Kaisho should not be held to the same standard as Yugen, I was definitely expecting a lot more from this concept. The skewer situation outside did not work at all. We ordered two: chicken and shishito. The chicken was the saddest, smallest, most ordinary piece of chicken I’ve seen in a long time. Not to mention, they did not prepare to keep the skewers warm in 65-degree temperature outside. Shishito was just OK. Could have used some seasoning. The Kaisho salad was described like this: ICEBERG, AVOCADO, CUCUMBER, HOUSE TOFU, WATERMELON RADISH, FERMENTED CARROT DRESSING. Got a few gigantic blocks of Iceberg salad with one of the most tasteless, uninspired dressings I’ve ever had. I thought it would be hard to mess up a salad. I was wrong. The only worthwhile plate we had was the $24-burguer. I’m always in the mood for a good burger but I probably would have had a better overall experience grilling in my balcony. At least the skewers would be warm! The wine was good.

Kaisho is doing its best under difficult circumstances. Perhaps not everyone is sensitive to eating next to loud cars, but this is a heads up for anyone who is. Sitting out on the patio is very close to the freeway. I did appreciate the extra steps the staff took with safely precautions-- more than other outdoor restaurants I'd been to.
