Le Coq is James Beard Best Chef finalist Tara Monsod’s new wave French steakhouse. Inspired by the modern Parisian culinary landscape, chef Tara reinvents classic dishes through her signature approach, blending cross-cultural references and ingredients for a distinctly SoCal expression of French cuisine. Bright touches and hyper-seasonal products ground the menu with San Diego style, while nods to chef Tara’s Southeast Asian background are interwoven throughout. Located in downtown La Jolla in a 1930’s historic building with exposed brick walls, steel trusses, and a barrel-vaulted ceiling. Into this storied shell is inserted a posh 1970’s diner club.

Why they're an Icon

Executive chef: Tara Monsod

From the OpenTable editors: The latest hotspot from powerhouse restaurant group Puffer Malarkey Collective, Le Coq is where you go for modern takes on French classics with SoCal and Asian influences. James Beard Award-nominated chef Tara Monsod dazzles with standout dishes like a duck l’orange with tamarind puree, kumquat, and chicory. Original exposed brick walls in the historic 1930s building, red velvet booths, and lush plants add to the swanky Parisian vibe.

We had to wait 40 minutes past our reserved time for a table. The service at the bar in the interim was mediocre! The preset holiday dinner menu was changed which was disappointing, although the changed menu was adequate. Dishes were of mixed quality, but mostly pretty good. In general, the place has more flash than substance!

Set menus are never as good. This proved to be too here. Preferred the a la carte. Starter fine. Main didn’t match expectations. Dessert forgettable.

Best dinning experience I’ve had in years . First time for me at Le Coq , welcomed by the general manager Jacky Fales. The bartender Randy delivered a unique tequila drink. Before heading off to dinner met the proprietor DP, he discussed the menu we would see . Gave us some of his favorites. Meal was excellent along with the service. Definitely going back when I come to town again

Everything we ordered was delish. We started with the bread and butter which is always great. We then had the bistro and celery salad, always a great choice, very tasty. The pork croquettes are delish. The swordfish, chicken, lamb and short ribs are all super delicious, the potato cakes with egg roe are awesome, the sautéed mushrooms are super tasty. Finally the cheesecake and pistacho desserts are a great finally.
