Conceived with legendary chef and food activist Alice Waters and led by acclaimed chef, writer, and cookbook author David Tanis, Lulu is a shared celebration of good food that is good for the planet. Lulu is a restaurant committed to prioritizing sustainability through local, regenerative food and design. Our mission focuses on procuring food directly from small, nearby farms practicing regenerative organic agriculture, which results in wholesome, delicious food grown using methods that combat the climate crisis.

Our restaurant is named after a wise Provencal cook, Lulu Peyraud, whose cooking and hospitality at Domaine Tempier in Bandol, France has always inspired David and Alice.

Until last night, LuLu (which we’ve perhaps visited around a dozen times) was our favorite restaurant. But as we told the manager, our dinner last night was the least satisfying meal we’ve ever had there. Here are some of the reasons why. The menu was unusually limited. Among the limited number (4) entrees were 2 pasta dishes. (The others were a fish soup and a beef dish). We have come to expect the food at LuLu to stand apart from other restaurants, but not last night. Much of what we ordered was bland or undistinguished, including scallop appetizer, Spanish tortilla and fruit crumble. The one exceptional dish was French onion soup. But it was served in a small ramekin (looked to be about 3/4 cup), which was half filled with bread. It literally contained just 6 soup spoons (i.e., tablespoons - or 3 oz) of soup. Essentially what I got was a $14 “teaser” (as our server described it). And while our server was friendly, she pretty much forgot about us after she greeted us. We will be hesitant to return to LuLu and - until they can demonstrate to us that last night was an anomaly - will no longer recommend it to friends.

Sat at the bar. The server knew we wanted to eat the potatoees and salad with the steak, but these sides were sent immediately, then we waited for the scallops and polenta...which the scallops arrived with the steak...very strange way to serve the food, and then I felt like the bad person for complaining. Surely, a restaurant, should help the customer to be served food at correct times. Plus the yuzu mezcal margarita was sickly sweet, like a desert. I have been several times and this really was my worst experience there. We turned up early, and was happy that we were accomodated, and seated early, so thank you for that. However our overall enjoyment of the meal was 2 out of 10.

We enjoyed each course--light, delicious and satisfying. The onion soup was just right, the polenta with mussels was delightful and the pasta dishes were memorable variations on familiar standbys.

We love LULU. Such a beautiful place and a great way to spend a few hours… visiting a museum with a wonderful courtyard restaurant. We’ve been twice and will for sure come back again.
