The mussels and bread were good, but the main entrees and desserts were lacking. Like a suburban neighborhood Italian place at $35-$60 per plate. Bad value. Tables were crunched together and in the middle of server lanes. Our server was using a fake Italian accent, which was amusing.

First, a confession: I found Lupo Verde by searching for "Affordable Italian" in DC. I read the reviews from recent diners. Before I tell you what was a bit 'off', let me say this is a nice place for a mid day meal. We enjoyed our food and wine. The place has a certain charm, and I recommend it - within a few limits. They have a prezzo fisso menu for $29 at lunch with a salad and main course included. The salads are decent - we had the Lupo Verde salad with bib lettuce and the pear salad with walnuts. Both were good. The dressing on the Lupo Verde salad needed a bit more vinegar and we ordered that. For mains, we had one Cacio Pepe and one Panino con Pollo. The pasta was decent and mostly faithful to the standard Cacio; the sandwich was less well received: the chicken cutlet was dry and over cooked. The mozzarella was cold and too thick for the sandwich. The wines we chose were both by-the-glass and decent. My wife had a decent Vermentino, and I had a Valpolicella. The Ripasso Valpolicella was $16 per glass, and after lunch we found the exact same wine in Trade Joes (next door) for $19 per bottle. Given that the restaurant buys wines for less than Trader Joes sells them, I would guess I paid for an entire bottle by buying one glass. It was a drinkable wine. Not sure if a 400% markup has become the 'new norm' or not. It kind of looks that way everywhere. Before tip, our bill was just under $80. With tip it came to $96. You can eat here and have a decent meal at a decent price.

The most amazing place!!! From the moment you walk in and Bridget greets you to the incredible food and impeccable service. Our highlight was the gnocchi, branzino and cacii de pepe. But the best part was the experience and hospitality from Bridget who provided the best service. What a fun night!

Lupo Verde is always good, but they really brought it on Valentine’s Day. The food was great but the service was exceptional. That’s rarely the case on a major holiday so hats off the them. I also appreciated that they had a fixed price menu but also a few regular options, as I don’t love being stuck with multiple courses I don’t want. I know that variety adds to the difficulty for a restaurant on a night like Valentine’s, so it’s even more impressive.

Smelled like weed the entire dinner. Probably should fix that. It wasn’t coming from outside either.
