Maccaroni Trattoria Italiana in the Melbourne CBD is serving rustic and authentic Italian food like its meant to be – flavoursome, simple and made with a healthy dose of Italian passion. The chefs behind this Manchester Lane restaurant are dedicated to following traditional recipes (just like Nonna used), using their knowledge from homeland Italy and adding just a touch of gourmet modernity. Freshly made pasta is undoubtedly the star of the show at Maccaroni Trattoria Italiana, ranging from gnocchi and tagliatelle to fettuccine and pappardelle. Yet the menu also offers rustic pizzas, traditional mains and homemade desserts that will satisfy any guest – especially when enjoyed alongside the Italian and Australian wines available. Better yet, the service and atmosphere of Maccaroni is both genuine and inviting. Located in the Melbourne CBD, this restaurant is understandably popular and making an advance booking is highly recommended.

Fabulous food in a nice spot with Italian vibes. We had the fettuccine and gnocchi and both were obviously freshly made and delicious. It’s a busy spot with lovely ambience. There is a 10% weekend surcharge, which we were surprised by coming from out of Melbourne. Would recommend.

Our cruise stopped in Sydney last month, and after an organized tour, we decided to dine at a restaurant in the CBD the next time we were in port. I found this one on Open Table, made a reservation, and invited two other cruise passengers to join us. We arrived 30 minutes before our reservation and were seated promptly. As the host sat us, he informed us that we had the table for 90 minutes. When an employee came to take our order, we requested separate checks. She said that was impossible and that the only way to pay with two credit cards was to split the bill equally. My husband and I shared a pizza, which we enjoyed because the cheese and the crust were delicious. The garden salad was large enough for two people to share. The other couple enjoyed their pasta dishes. I recommend the operator consider how they can be more accommodating to international visitors. We didn't have sufficient Australian currency to pay cash, and the credit card system was not customer-friendly. We were also not informed that we needed to pay at the entrance, so we sat a while after eating. A Caesar salad is available on the lunch menu, but the server told my husband he could not order it at dinner. The wine list is diverse, with offerings from Australia and Italy.

We had high hopes for today’s lunch having enjoyed previous visits but this experience was awful. We booked for ten to celebrate my mum’s birthday yet from the moment we arrived the service was appalling. The two women serving us were rude, impatient and acted as if we were an inconvenience. No warmth, no politeness, just hostility! We were rushed to order and when they got our drinks wrong they blamed us. My nan’s meal never arrived. Despite her confirming her order, they insisted she hadn’t ordered at all. No apology no effort to fix it, just irritation at having to correct their own mistake. We weren’t difficult customers; we ordered quickly and were patient when things went wrong. Yet they treated us like a problem. It was embarrassing, especially as we had recommended this place to family visiting for the first time. When paying we politely asked about splitting the bill. Initially, they agreed but then changed their minds, creating unnecessary confusion. Maybe it was a language barrier? Or maybe it was terrible communication skills. The food was nice but the dreadful service completely ruined the experience. Many of us work in hospitality and know it’s tough but their attitudes were inexcusable. Sadly, we won’t be returning.

Very small serving sizes. We felt very rushed. Rude staff. Very, very noisy. Drinks were flat. Poor value for money. Extremely disappointing.

“Perfecto” in a word! Nonna’s Lasagna is on par to my late Nonna’s and hers got 👍 from all who had the experience. You won’t be disappointed with the carbonara pasta(fettuccine or spaghetti your call) nor the Campari Spritz to kick off and the Ricotta cannelloni. Enough already just go and be pleasantly pleased.

15% surcharge because of Public holiday? 3% surcharge because I payed with debit card? Food wasn't good, lamb in ragu was terrible and had a lot of veina. Pizza's dough was terrible, dry and not worth the name to be called Italian. No risotto with chicken or mushroom. Waitress having a lot of personal problems written on her face. Never ever coming back. I wish this place go down and close. Disgrace

The service from the waitress was shocking. She couldn't care less and clearly didn't want to be there. We had to call her to place our order after a few minutes and she pretty much ignored us after that. She didn't even bother to ask if we would like more drinks or dessert. She really spoiled the whole experience. To top that, the food was also pretty average, with small portions for the price they charged. I had the Spaghetti Carbonara, it was very salty and the pasta was very al-dente. I wouldn't go back in a hurry.

Have been here previously. Food had good portion size however was a bit too al dente for our liking. Just another minute in the pot and pan and it would have been fabulous. The lasagne could have done with a little more beef a fewer layers of pasta and that would have got five stars as well. Meals were super fresh. Staff were friendly and the meals were served in a good amount of time.
