   It’s been some time since I’ve dined at this Mastro’s location in Costa Mesa. The ambiance and energy is always exciting (most of their locations are). We were greeted by a friendly hostess and seated fairly quick. Nobody at the rostrum asked us for a coat check. I guess their guests like to eat with their jackets on? (sarcasm). We flagged down a nice gentleman who checked it for us while we were seated at our table. The waiter was attentive and friendly. The steaks were good but not top tier like other Mastro’s locations or other top steakhouses. We ordered a 6oz. and an 8oz. filet steak, however both were a little shy of their ounce weight but we didn’t contact the “scale police”. Lastly, the prices of their glasses by wine selection was quite higher than top neighboring restaurants in OC (nearly 300% margins). We did appreciate the fast service and attention to detail though.

   Food was very good and the side dishes were delicious. The steak was cooked well but not exception compared to most high end steak restaurants. That being said what a massive turn off when the bill arrived and it included $5 for the bread basket that was placed in the table without asking or mentioning it was being charged. And then was asked while sitting down if we were celebrating anything to which i said yes it was my birthday dinner. At dessert we ordered a dessert and they brought out an additional cheesecake slice with happy birthday written on the plate in chocolate. That slice was on the bill for $6. How INCREDIBLE TACKY. No one asked for the slice nor would we have ordered it and then to bring it out like it’s free and then charge for it in an establishment of this caliber is comical and tacky.

   In comparison to other steakhouses, my husband and I were less than impressed. The food wasn’t seasoned and for the price we paid it was unbelievable.

   Delicious food, service was great and we had a nice time. Only thing was we reserved but ended up in a middle table at the back of the restaurant. That was a little uncomfortable but overall still was a great experience.

   The service and food were very nice. Valet only but it accepts card so no need to worry about cash

   Disappointed with attention to detail. We were there to celebrate a birthday. Purchased desert but bday was not mentioned. We told staff and added to reservation notes.

   This used to be my favorite restaurant and was excited all week to be going back The server acted like he was being inconvenienced by being there. I ordered my steak medium plus and it was bloody . I couldn’t eat it from all the fat and grissle on it and what I ate was only mediocre flavor. They brought out leftovers to us and put my bag of food on the floor next to my feet !! Extremely disappointed!! I’m hoping the Newport Beach location is still okay .
