About this restaurant

Taverns have flourished along Santa Ynez’s Sagunto Street since 1906. Sixty years ago, four busy bars entertained the locals and visitors alike. These establishments were named Last Chance, the Bum Steer, Parker’s and the Maverick Saloon. While three of the four original taverns have since disappeared into history, the legendary Maverick Saloon is still going strong and continues to be a staple in the Santa Ynez valley.

In 1963, Jerry and Diane Thompson bought nine bare lots from publisher tycoon Hastings Harcourt. Plans were drawn up for a museum, restaurant, two-story hotel and the Maverick Saloon, which is named after a TV series starring James Garner. A few years later (approx. 1968) the barn was built next to the saloon. To achieve an antique look, the Thompsons used materials salvaged from demolished Victorian houses. The barn’s history began as the “Lulubelle’s Restaurant” and a tool rental facility. The barn and dancehall became a permanent part of the Maverick Salo

Good food, love the street tacos and the salmon dinner. Wish the dance floor was bigger. Other than that, it’s a fun place. I go about once a month.

Monday night. Dined with the family at one of the four-top tables in the main bar area. Hadn’t been here in years. Looked around, and thought ‘this food is not going to be good’. Anyway, ordered flat iron steak, wife got the Nachos, kid got the chicken and fries. The steak was quite small , I was initially disappointed, but when I tasted it, it was actually great. Very flavorful , tender , and well seasoned. Absolutely delicious. The Nachos were pretty good. The kids chicken was above average too. We had some beers and wine which were good. Staff were attentive and friendly. Don’t judge a book by its cover. We’ll be back.

This was a treat! The food was sooo good (that truffle pizza, and the strawberry pastry dessert!), the live band and atmosphere, but the best part was the staff! Who were all so nice and polite, and exceptionally accommodating for us. We are 3 sisters that came to visit our brother for his birthday and this is the place he picked to go! Thanks to all the staff who made this night for us siblings so special!
